Came to the restaurant after watching some Youtube vlog as well as reviewing the reviews hoping for a good fine dining experience in CDMX.
We went for an early dinner (around 5:30). Place was empty and servers were amazing and very attentive. Decor and atmosphere were amazing. The appetizers were delicious. We ordered Tacos and we called it the best Tacos we had so far (we stayed away from street Tacos due to worries over food poisoning - so we possibly missing out some great tasting Tacos there). Those were the great things and the 2 stars were for the above.
Now, the downfalls was - Food poisoning:
We ordered bottled water as well as a can of coke. We asked for no ice. They brought a tall glass with ice, and 2 small glasses with lemon for the water. We asked again for no ice and they brought back a dry tall glass for the coke. The 2 small glasses had water on the rim so it was possibly just washed with tap water but not fully dried. We ordered steaks and asked for medium well done and closer to done. Both steaks came out medium raw and closer to raw. We didn't want to be mean as it could be some communication problems as we don't speak Spanish. We finished it as much as we could. The steaks were lack of flavor and yet way more expensive than the Tacos. I ate the same food as my husband throughout the day, and the only thing we could think of me having less than him, was the water. I had 1 sip from the small glass, and he had both small glasses and finished the bottled water in those glasses. When back to the hotel, I had small cramps and a couple of bathroom sessions. My husband, around an 8 hours after the dinner and then had severe food poisoning and was out of commission for a full day until we got antibiotic+imodium from the local pharmacy. We were not sure if it were the raw steaks or the wet glasses (which we lean more towards it).

Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Restaurante Sonia with a few coworkers, and we were fortunate enough to try two of each entrée and main course on the menu. For me, the standout dishes were the Pulpo a la Mario and the Carnitas de Guajolote en Mole Negro. The octopus was cooked to perfection—tender with just the right amount of char—while the turkey carnitas in mole were incredibly juicy, rich in flavor, and beautifully balanced.
Among the starters, the croquetas were the highlight—crispy on the outside, creamy inside, and packed with flavor. The cheese board also offered a delightful variety and made for a very enjoyable start to the meal.
As for dessert, while most were just okay, the mazapán dessert truly stood out. As a mazapán fan, I found it light, airy, and almost cloud-like—an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
Overall, the experience was exceptional. From the service to the flavors, everything was memorable. I’ll definitely be returning to this...
Read moreSo we read the great reviews and gave it a try. Food was good, albeit heavy (mayo, oil, etc.). One disappointment was waiting for the main entree that never came. After sitting through a large party next to us getting served, we asked about our sea bass and received the reply, 'it's not coming.'
Ok, we had eaten quite a bit, something lost in translation, we could live with this.
The major shocker was as follows. When we initially sit down, I order a tequila, Herradura Reposado (less than 200 pesos). They advise they are out and put three bottles in front of me. One is Don Julio, which I know. From experience I know that it is roughly the same price, a little higher. The other two I don't know so I figure I'll try one. When the bill comes, I see the shot is 790 pesos. Yes, for the shot. I was never advised that this was premium, etc., just a replacement for the Herradura.
They were completely unsupportive so we paid and left. ...
