Being vegetarian and having read great reviews, was quite looking forward to the visit but it turned out to be rather disappointing. Opened in 1963, the state of the interiors makes it quite believable. The buffet spread upstairs (1-5 pm 132 pesos monday to friday, 147 on weekends) seemed rather unappetising so went back downstairs for a la carte. Service is attentive, portion sizes are huge, prices are ok, complimentary bread basket and butter , just the food was neither tasty nor spicy. All original mexican dishes, the meat replaced with just soya. No quinoa or anything more inspired or exotic. The mixed fruit juices were quite alright, my son liked his drink called Frutastica. My garlic and egg drop soup had some eggshells in it. Surprisingly the restaurant seems popular with the locals who perhaps want a break from eating meat. The place was nearly full at 2.30 pm on sunday. There are lots of ancient pictures of Hindu gods on the walls, no Indian dishes on the menu as such. There is an English menu card too upon request but does not have the prices mentioned on it. Am...
Read moreDont be deceived by the line out the door. I've never had more bland processed food. It IS very cheap ($50-65 per plate) but still not worth the price.
I had a jugo verde, it was tiny. I had the Jug Salad which was made with bacon bits like commercial bacos. I'd anticipated something like a coconut bacon or... anything other than highly processed bacos. It was served with oil and soy sauce as a dressing. I asked, and the waiter confirmed, that it was balsamic. What a surprise. The spinach was also thick, broad leaf spinach, not appetizing in any way.
I also had the vegetable lasagne. I've never had a more flavorless plate at a restaurant in my life. I couldn't identify any vegetable flavor in the plate and the cheese or cheese substitute was also flavorless.
I'm used to vegan and vegetarian restaurants being full flavored experiences with minimally processed food. This was the opposite of those.
The service was prompt and friendly. If only service were enough to carry...
Read moreWorse vegetarian restaurant in Mexico City. It took a long time to be waited on while our serve stood by talking with another server. People arriving after us had been waited on and received their drinks before he approached our table. I wish we got his name, he was hands down the worse server I’ve ever encountered in Mexico City. Our food arrived, appitizers and main meal at the same time and before we even had drinks. We got up and removed silverware from another table. My Mexican friends removed the 15% tip I left and gave it to me a few blocks away telling me not to support laziness and a bad attitude. The food was bland and had no flavor, I truly don’t understand any of the...
