¡Super deliciosos tacos! In the US we are used to tacos with grilled meats. In Mexico, as you can imagine, there are so many different types of tacos. Tacos Hola El Guero specializes in Tacos de guisados, or tacos with stewed items not just meats but also vegetables.
There are so many choices to tempt you, and today I just had two: one was a cheese-stuffed chili poblano en salsa, and the other was rajas (sliced poblanos cooked in a creamy sauce with onions and potato). There are salsas for you to help yourself to, as well as pickled onions.
Do yourself a favor and order just one taco at a time so that you can enjoy each one hot and fresh just seconds after the worker spoons your filling onto a warm fresh tortilla from the little charming ceramic cazuelas that hold each of the dozen or more homey fillings.
Since I arrived sort of early just before the noon hour, it wasn’t very crowded. In fact, I was able to sit at a little table right in front on the sidewalk. After I finished my second and final taco, a young man approached and started singing and playing guitar on the sidewalk. As other diners began showing up, I gave up my table rather than linger and enjoy the young troubadour’s offering.
Looking forward to returning and trying more of the guisados: higado, torta de coliflor y de camaron (fried puffs of cauliflower and shrimp, respectively), quelites (field greens) and more!
EDIT: one year later we enjoyed more of these homey tacos: Chile verde, rajas con crema, and papas con chorizo. Still awesome. Good deal...
Read moreSimple walk-up cafe with sidewalk seating (and standing). Excellent tacos and a large selection. We were a little confused by the process but the helpful young man working to clear dishes explained it to us. Go in and get the attention of the servers/cooks behind the counter. This part might be a little chaotic - there is not really an order or line. Just try to pay attention to who was there before you. Order your tacos and they will ask what toppings you want -- everything is included in the price. Grab your bottled drinks and the young man will rush over with a bottle opener. Go outside and eat your tacos. If you want more, grab the servers' attention again and tell them your order. When you are finished, go up to the man standing by the door and tell him how many tacos and what drinks you had. Pay by cash or card. Note that most food stands operate this same way, but here the process felt unexpected to us because it's a restaurant with a counter rather than a more informal food stand. Our favorite was the bistec en pasilla -- one of the best things we ate on this trip. We also enjoyed the picadillo and the chorizo y papa. Very fast - even though it was busy at 11:00 on a Saturday, we were in and out in 15 minutes,...
Read moreWhat an epic place!!! They have big vats of all types of delicious things - from stuffed peppers to pulled chicken. A line forms at the bar where you can order your tacos with the men working behind the bar. My Spanish was terrible so a kind man explained the process to me. You can choose an option for a taco filling and they will ask you if you’d like rice and beans in the taco, along with guacamole, onions and or cheese. There is also a salsa bar that you can top your tacos with. The tacos turn out to be massive because they give you a pretty big serving of the ingredient of your choice, and then adding all those incredible additions make the tacos huge!
I’m sure all are incredible, but the ones we tried and really enjoyed were tinga de pollo, calabazitas (pumpkin), chile verde, and torta de coliflor (cauliflower).
I was impressed with the variety of vegetarian options. I would definitely...
