i’ll start with the positives: the venue. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous on the inside and you eat tatami (japanese style, super low and sitting on the ground) and honestly, that alone is what redeems the entire experience. The cocktails and bar program albeit small (only 2 original cocktails + mezcal cocktails with your choice of fruit) was also very good and enjoyable.
The restaurant is 100% vegan which in Oaxaca is really not a big deal because so much of the gastronomy is already inherently vegan. The entire culture of regional food is “vegan” and I think it’s important to understand this as a set-of-expectations.
The tasting menu is $800mxn and absolutely not worth it. Every single plate was underwhelming and really shines the inexperience of the head chef. To be in the absolute most “fine-dining” venue i’ve come across in Oaxaca and be served a super simple and underwhelming tamale smothered in mole exhibits such a lack of execution, creativity, experience and context that I was frustrated at the inferred waste of my dining experience.
Having recently had an eye-opening, absolutely inventive and incredible all vegan tasting menu last month in a very humble 10 top room, having this meal at RSN was abhorrent.
The “ramen” was the worst dish of all as it was literally a broth of zucchini & baby romaine leaves. THATS IT. nothing “ramen” about it at all. No noodles, kombu, tare, or anything at all that would have you reference or touchstone any ramen you’ve had before in your life. It was just a lackluster water bathe for zucchini and lettuce. Not even a mushroom!
The dessert was easily the best dish and if i had to guess, the pastry/dessert chef is someone of experience and know how while the line/head chef, is REALLY lacking in all departments.
Overall, i would say the venue is can’t miss but the food is sooooo lackluster, uninspired, underwhelming and bore that it almost feels like stealing given...
Read moreI booked a reservation for two people for 1/1/24 on 12/9/23 (3+ weeks in advance). I do not live in Oaxaca, this was for a New Years vacation.
When I got to the restaurant for the reservation, they asked how I made the reservation, and told me that the it was not open. This is despite me receiving several email notifications confirming my reservation, including one the day-of. For the record, I made the reservation by navigating through their website, and provided proof of the confirmation to them.
What's worse is that they eventually told me that I was not the first person they turned away that evening for the same reason. This means that despite knowing of this issue, they made no attempt to call or email me to notify me of the mistake. We took the time to dress up and travel to the restaurant, and were left with no plans for that evening.
There were no attempts on their end to offer any solution; not even an attempt to book me for another night.
Overall there was a lack of professionalism throughout this experience. I would recommend you confirm your reservation over the phone before committing to showing up. They might be closed but still be taking...
Read moreWonderful place to enjoy creative and unique meals.
Right in the heart of Oaxaca city, this "no name" Restaurant offers an escape from noise, crowds and typical food.
Of course the ingredients are local but the meals have a Oaxacan gourmet style. I tried the "Salmon Tataki" which had kimchi, starfruit and corn miso. The taste was fantastic if you like the mix of these ingredients.
I had the "Black out Chocolate" for dessert and it was so delicious, perfect balance between semi dark chocolate and Greek yogurt. The original one includes peanuts on top but I asked them if I could do without or change it, so it came with pistachios instead. Nice treat.
The waiters were super nice, helpful smiley and knowledgeable about their meals and drinks.
The place has a small swimming pool that you can enjoy for a reasonable cover.
The restrooms are so clean, beautiful and fancy.
I would be more than happy...
