Así Restaurant & Beach Club — Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

We saw the reviews and were super excited to dine in this place. Unfortunately we had a very poor experience here.

There were 4 tables occupied when we got there (so not a full place). We sat down and waited around 10 minutes before asking ourselves for a menu. We were given one and the waiter returned around 10 minutes later to take our order.

We ordered 2 drinks and 3 dishes. The drinks arrived around 5 minutes later (so we had already been here for 25 mins before we even had our drinks). We finished them, the food was nowhere to be seen and we weren’t provided with anything to snack on while we waited (totopos o pan o algo).

Around 50 minutes after we arrived, my partner suggested we left because we had been waiting for so long. I said no, because they probably were preparing the food and felt bad about leaving them with it, but I did start to pressure the waiters to hurry the cook.

While we waited we ordered two more drinks. The food arrived approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes after we got to the restaurant. We ordered fish tacos, tiradito mixto and coconut shrimp.

Finally we could start eating… but then I take the first bite of my coconut shrimp and it still had the shells under the fried coconut!!! I had to send it back, and then the waiter told me that they couldn’t make it back because they had no more coconut, but that we would get a courtesy for the inconvenience and that I could order something else. He was really kind about it.

So I order the shrimp alioli, and it comes like 10 minutes later (super fast). It was good, nothing really special.

Then the check arrives and it was the full price, no discount, no courtesy, nothing. We paid and left. We paid around 1300 pesos for 4 beers and 3 dishes. Definitely not worth it.

We had a fantastic server - definitely the best part of the experience combined with the view.

Food - our starters (guacamole and nachos) were fantastic. I had the white clam linguine. First, they made it with spaghetti and not linguine, which is fine, but for the price I would expect better attention to detail. The sauce was incredibly salty, to the point where I couldn’t finish it. I am a great fan of seafood, and love the sharp saltiness of seafood, however this was way too much as it was the sauce that was salty. The clams were the worst part. I love clams, but these had black mushy contents inside. Very unappetizing. Normally clams are supposed to be soaked in clean water so that the clam can flush out its insides, otherwise you get undigested food/mud left inside the clam which is just really gross both flavour wise and texturally. I’m personally not a fan of it, but maybe it was intentional.

I had the lady in red margarita, which was delicious! I don’t drink alcohol, so I ordered it non-alcoholic. My partner got Pina coladas, also non-alcoholic. When we got the bill we saw that they had charged us full price for our non-alcoholic cocktails. $280 pesos for me (x2 because l got 2 drinks so total $560 pesos for 2 non-alcoholic drinks). Obviously we thought this was a mistake - our server said he’d ask the manager and the manager said this was the restaurant’s policy?? How is that even possible when the alcohol is literally the most expensive part of the drink? Here right now with my mother and staying at Maya villa (condo hotels) affiliated w el taj. Breakfast was delicious but for lunch the Cobb mariscos (seafood Cobb) salad was so good!!! You feel amazing after eating it. So healthy and fresh!!! Like a super food meal you get all your energy back. Highly recommend. They did cook the seafood for my mom beforehand as we requested no raw seafood for that day only. I ordered by my phone on Google chat, not sure if this is a normal thing. The owner Roberto and Polo who were answering my chat were top tier. Polo delivered it to my hotel a block away. If you do this pls tip well, they really deserve it and go above and beyond.
