Updated review = 3 stars: We visited Playa del Carmen again this year and returned to Comet on two different times for dinner during this stay. Unfortunately, our experiences were not like they were before. The staff has changed, and the eagerness to provide a great experience has been replaced by complacency. The food consistency, quality, and value were all lacking. On one visit we had well-cooked crinkle fries, on the other visit we had overly-fried skinny fries. The great hamburger buns from the next door bakery, are gone and now the hamburgers come with basic processed store buns (while there are other good vegan bun options in the area to source). The burgers feel smaller and cheaper, and patties more fried. We understand completely that ingredient supplies may vary and can run out, but to not at least stock and offer consistent fries... How is a customer supposed to come back for a favorite if they don't know what they will get on each visit?
The saddest part was that the second visit here during this stay was for our last night in PDC and we thought to try something new on their menu since the burgers just weren't of the same quality as before. What a mistake! We tried the Scrambled Tofu Sandwich and it was the saddest and most disappointing meal experience. What showed up was no sandwich but a basic little hot dog bun with about 2 tablespoons worth of tofu in it, which was not done in any of the normal scrambled tofu ways one would expect, not even yellow, along with some shredded lettuce, unripe tomato and option of fake bacon meat. It took literally 3 bites to eat and was a waste of flavor, money, and ruined the whole dinner experience. It is not our style to complain or ask for meal replacements. It is the job of the owners and staff to provide an appropriate experience, and the truth is that the "Scrambled Tofu Sandwich" is badly named and badly priced on the menu. It is NO sandwich and while it comes with some tofu, don't expect a typical scrambled tofu, and it is definitely not worth the price being charged for it.
The thing is that since 2 years ago there are so many more vegan restaurants in PDC, and for the same price or slightly less or slightly more one can get an AMAZING vegan sandwich or similar meal, even right on 5th! The staff should care more, not less, to retain customers and provide a quality and valuable experience, as there are so many better choices now for the same or similar amount of money. This is not the time to be complacent or careless.
We love supporting vegan restaurants, but sadly for us this was the last time eating at Comet for when we return to PDC again. Hopefully, the owners do apply more consistency, quality, and effort to retain future customers.
Original review posted 2 years ago = 5 stars: This vegan restaurant is a treat to have in Playa del Carmen. We have gone there now multiple times for the Comet burgers because they are SO GOOD! They are juicy and full of great flavors, easily some of the best vegan burgers. The milkshakes are super yummy too and such a nice cold treat! Each time we have gone, the food and service were of the same consistently good quality. The food has always come fast (above average compared to the norm in Mexico) and the staff are attentive. We are happy to support this vegan restaurant and the nice group of staff who work there. Keep up...
Read moreI arrived late (7:30pm) in Playa Del Carmen so I ordered immediately from COMET 984, when you’re vegan, it’s not always easy to find vegan food when traveling. They waited ONE HOUR (I ordered approximately 1 and a half hour prior to closing time) to tell me that they ran out of everything I wanted to order, and everything else I suggested as a replacement too, with the excuse of “we were too busy today,” ok, I understand you may run out of stuff unexpectedly, but wait one hour to tell me that? I arrived hungry and tired in Playa Del Carmen, I was looking forward to eating their food, but they couldn’t even let me know quick, so I could find someplace else.
I asked for recommendation of some place else vegan to order from, no help. But I did manage to find another place, but by the time they canceled my order (one hour after my order being placed), this other vegan place had just closed. If they had just told me from the get go that they had run out of food, I wouldn’t be giving them this bad review right now. ZERO respect for the customer and for a fellow vegan.
This place seems like they have great food, but I unfortunately cannot tell, I couldn’t get ahold of their food. All I got ahold of was their service, and it is really really really bad. Extremely unhappy with Comet 984. I wish I were here writing a good...
Read more4/4/22 Updated. We drove an hour to eat hear again and it was worth it. Still delicious!! Devoured loaded fries, cheese burger, BBQ burger, snickers milkshake and peanut butter milkshake. Snickers cheesecake to go, haven't tried it yet but it looks amazing.
We weren't going to eat here, we said "we can get a burger anywhere", but we ended up staying at a hotel 4 minutes away and decided we'd check the vibe.
Cute little diner spot with a 3 table brick patio out front. Decorated exactly how you would expect a 50's diner to look.
They sat us 25ish minutes before closing and we're happy to take care of us. Unfortunately they had run out of a few items so we ended up with loaded fries, the 1st 2 burgers on the menu and a homemade snickers milkshake. Holy s#t!! It was unf#king real!! Gourmet fast food!! We were literally saying "wow" between each bite!
I haven't eaten meat in over 20 years so needless to say I've had hundreds of veggie burgers. I have never had a veggie burger like this!!!!! I want to try everything on the menu but I also want those burgers again 😭
We'll be back for dinner...
