When a friend of mine, who had recently visited Tulum, said that the two foremost highlights from her trip was (a) the psychedelic mushroom experiences she had had with a local shaman, and (b) having a burrito at Burro Tulum, I at first thought she must be under the spell of those mushroom still. Now, I am certainly not a stranger to the great pleasure a burrito can offer, but, really, did she think that I would believe that a burrito from a random food truck would represent a key highlight of her trip, given everything else that Tulum has to offer? Needless to say, when I got here myself, I had to investigate the reliability of her advice, which, as I am sure you can tell from my initial skepticism, had suffered a material downgrade. Well, the joke's on me. Burro Tulum, consisting of nothing but a tiny cart in an obscure corner of Tulum town, offers, I dare say, the very best burrito in the world. Period. I am not going to embarrass myself by trying to put into words the unparalleled combination of flavor, taste and texture these burritos offer. I am not going to desperately try to describe the ingredients, all of them of the highest quality, that underpin this experience . I am not going to detail my conversation with the owner, a fascinating and inspiring man by himself. Instead, I am simply and most persistently going to urge whomever reading these words to, please, ensure that you make yourself over to this establishment when in Tulum. As to my friend, I clearly owe her an apology, although I remain unclear what the proper rectification ought to be. Perhaps trying to find a local shaman? While this might be next to impossible given we both reside in the US, at least it is bound to be a far easier exercise than finding an equally satisfying burrito. That, to my great chagrin, is an...
Read moreThis place was recommended by my Airbnb hosts and it also had high reviews on google so I decided to give it a try. It was great! The burrito (as the owner explained to me) is a traditional style from his home back in Chihuahua, meaning it’s all about the grill. Meat, veggies & potato. No guac, rice, beans etc. I love that because it means it healthier & more protein driven. I like watching them cook your personal meat up in front of you and the added ingredients & home made sauces were very good. I ate half my burrito on the spot and took the other half home and honestly I enjoyed the other half at home more because I think the flavours all really set in together, so don’t worry about getting this to go because it will taste just fine. The highlight of the entire experience however was actually the awesome guy grilling and the owner himself. They are both super nice, funny and really enjoyable to talk to. I would go back just for another convo with them. My only critique as with almost every other place I am reviewing in tulum is the price. For me the price before tip in CAD is almost $18 (240 pesos) I find this very high compared to us/can offerings but once again, this is typical for tulum so it is what it is. I recommend this place and...
Read moreThis place is NOT on the central strip of main street, but youll be rewarded with a tasty burrito if you walk to this place. The food is cooked in an outdoor grill built into a cart, with covered seating inside a structured building. The staff here are super friendly, as they ask you about your life story and try to relate with you as much as you can. Its a great way to pass the time, or even practice your espanol, as they can take quite some time actually preparing your burrito. They make several sauces themselves, and have you try each one with free chips as you wait.
The burrito itself is not groundbreaking, but it hits the spot. Coal roasted meats and veggies, flavorful rice and beans, all within a grilled burrito. If you've been drinking all day, this thing will help absorb some of that alcohol. If you've been swimming in cenotes all day, this also refuels all the energy you've spent. I had a few bites left and waited to finish the rest at my hotel 20 minutes later. I was quite surprised on how quickly it lost its warmth,...
