While the ambiance at Canova sets high expectations, I must admit that the food and service fell painfully short. I usually refrain from posting negative reviews, but my recent experience compels me to share my concerns. It's baffling how this place has garnered positive reviews, unless there was some unfortunate mishap in the kitchen during our visit.
My family and I dined here for my sister's birthday on January 31st, and we sampled a variety of dishes from the menu. Our expectations were high, but sadly, they weren't met.
Let's dissect the dishes we tried:
TRUFFLE "gnocchi": These gnocchi were an absolute disaster. Enormous, oddly shaped, and drowning in an overwhelming amount of truffle that quickly became nauseating.
Beef Carpaccio: The truffle oil overpowered the delicate taste of the beef, rendering it unrecognizable.
Anchovy/Caper Pizza: A salt bomb – anchovies, capers, and cheese, all excessively salty. It was an amateurish attempt at pizza-making.
Hummus: Acceptable, but the heavy pesto flavor was a distraction.
Veggie Lasagna: A mushy, flavorless rendition that tasted like a microwave-reheated leftover.
Burrata: This was the lone shining star, a highlight amidst the mediocrity.
Scampi Pasta: An overly fishy taste that lacked freshness. The saving grace was the homemade pasta.
The service was equally disappointing. Despite the restaurant not being crowded, we had to practically beg for attention from the servers. When seeking recommendations, they were unhelpful, offering no guidance on what to order.
Leaving Canova, we were collectively disillusioned, with my sister apologizing for her choice of birthday venue.
In conclusion, Canova's stunning decor deserves better than the lackluster food and service it currently offers. It's my hope that the management takes swift and necessary action to elevate the dining experience to match the restaurant's...
Read moreI went to Canova twice on my solo trip to Tulum, the food really is fantastic - specifically the tagliatelle with shrimp and the eggplant parmigiana (this dish was AMAZING). The service was excellent overall. I would like to specifically thank Jorge for his excellent customer service. He was my server on my first visit and was so lovely the second time around as well - coming around to see how everything was.
I do have one piece of feedback. At the end of my meal, as I was finishing my glass of wine and contemplating dessert, I was asked by another server in the restaurant to move tables so a larger party could sit at my table. I asked for the cheque instead and when my server came over, he did not seem to even know this other server had asked me to move tables. For a very nice restaurant, this didn’t feel very professional. I wouldn’t have minded switching tables, but it would have been more appropriate for the gentleman who wanted the table to have my server to ask me this, rather than someone I did not know). Not a huge deal - just a piece of feedback for the future.
Overall wonderful experience....
Read moreCanova completely blew my expectations out of the water! It was a symphony of taste that took me on an unforgettable culinary journey.
The first course, a masterpiece of thinly sliced beef carpaccio, was a revelation. Kissed with truffle oil and adorned with aged cheese shavings on a bed of peppery arugula, it was the perfect amuse-bouche to awaken the palate.
Next up, the Tartare de Rez nestled on crispy toast was a textural delight. Succulent, fresh, and bursting with flavor, it seamlessly continued the flavor adventure.
But the true star of the show was the Gnocchi ala Romana. Imagine this: pillowy-soft gnocchi, each the size of a large scallop, bathed in a luxuriously cheesy Taleggio sauce and showered with fragrant truffle shavings. Every bite was an explosion of taste and texture. I can honestly say I've never experienced gnocchi this good – it was an absolute winner!
The entire meal was a testament to culinary artistry and pure passion. Canova is a must-try for anyone visiting Tulum. Don't miss out on this incredible...
