Insanely good value and delicious food. After our car breaking down on Christmas Eve and walking around town not sure where to eat we chose Don Cafeto mostly because of an obscure sign advertising they cook everything in extra virgin olive oil (not that we're that picky). Both hostesses was extremely friend and continuously walked around checking on everyone. We ordered sopa azteca, chicken broth, and melted cheese to start all of which were quite good. They also serve pico de gallo, pickled veggies (and a whole bulb of garlic--> amazing) complementary. But the main dishes were fantastic. Arrachera (skirt steak) tacos were bomb. So was the chicken mole and the stuffed peppers but the king was the whole fried fish (see picture) and the most genius thing about it is that they add fried garlic bits on top of it which differentiates it from any other whole fried fish you'll have in Mexico. All in all we had 3 appetizers, 4 mains, 2 tequilas, 5 beers, 1 club soda and left a 20% tip for about $100. Highly recommended!

Can’t recommend this place to anyone. My girlfriend and I ordered at the same time but our food showed up 15 minutes apart. Lucky enough we wanted to share so we both sat there eating off one plate. By the time our second plate arrived we were half way done. Then we asked for plates to share and then those took another 5 minutes….this place wasn't busy at all. The food wasn’t anything special either. When i looked at the kitchen none of the cooks were wearing gloves so I guess thats just the way they do it here. The check never came so we got up to go pay and the little girl taking payment said that it was cash only…???? Luckily the manager told her to use the card machine and we were able to get out of that place. Not sure what’s so special here, it felt like we were stuck in a crummy Denny’s.

This is the first review I’ve written in six years—and it’s for the same restaurant that amazed me back then. The first time I came here with my dad, we were drawn in by the owner’s piano playing and singing. From there, it was one surprise after another: perfectly grilled shrimp that’s crispy on the outside and tender inside, and hands down the best pasta I’ve had anywhere in the world—along with so many other delicious dishes. The most incredible part? After six years, coming back felt like nothing had changed. The flavors are just as amazing (though I did notice the pasta no longer has the touch of lemon). I can’t recommend this place highly enough. While staying in Tulum, I came here every single day. It practically became my company cafeteria!

Although we are originally from the US, we are residents of Mexico. We have had several dinners at Don Cafeto over the past several months. It is/was a really good restaurant, with excellent choices and excellent live music. We liked it enough to take visiting family and friends here on a regular basis. However...THAT STOPS AS OF TONIGHT.

We took some friends here tonight, ordered our meals and all was excellent - until the checks came. On the bottom of the check, THEY ADDED A 10% SERVICE FEE. First of all, this is ILLEGAL in Mexico. Now, let me make this clear, this was not a hand-written addition, this was PRINTED BY THEIR EQUIPMENT. I showed him my residency card, told him I knew it was illegal, told him I was going to call PROFECO and he immediately started apologizing and said I only had to pay the "sub-total". He then quickly took the checks from us and walked away. I asked him for a copy of the check and he came back with a new one that didn't have the service fee added. I asked to speak to the manager, but he never got anyone and I didn't see one around. As a last insult to what would have been an excellent meal, he brought my change ($40 pesos) in...forty $1 peso coins. Really?

I will be calling PROFECO tomorrow and we and our friends and families will no longer eat here. Really sad as this place had a lot going for it. Our friends that we brought with us here tonight are also residents of MX, so they will also be spreading the word about this. There are plenty of good restaurants who do things the right way - I don't need this place.

TOURISTS: Do NOT allow restaurants to get away with this. THEY KNOW it is illegal and try to gouge unknowing gringos of an extra 10%. Is that a significant amount? No. But, that is missing the point. CHECK your receipts, call them out on this a contact PROFECO!

If the owner or manager reads this, I would love to hear from you, but I have a...

This was some of the worst mexican food I have ever had. This includes Mexican restaurants in Poland. The mole tasted it was simply seeet chocolate mixed with a blended pico de gallo, no dried chiles or spices or nuts... bland and sweet. The chicken in the mole enchiladas was not seasoned at all. The carro beans tasted straight out of the can. The portion of rice was again totally unseasoned, tiny and expensive at 120 pesos. The tuna stuffed avocado my wife got was half an avocado filled with tinned tuna and mayo arranged on large chucks of unseasoned vegetables. She had previously asked repeatedly in Spanish if it was tinned or fresh and was assured it was going to be fresh. The waiter seemed annoyed when she sent it back and took some convincing to even admit that h3 had misinformed us. When the bill came the waiter had the audacity to simply circle the +15% tip option in such a manner as to cover the 0 5 and 10% options, trying to clearly scam us. The meal cost 45 eur equivalent, which was 2 beverages, my wife only had an appetiser and I only had a main, albeit with miniscule 'sides' of rice and beans. Avoid this place, spend half as much and get some actual good local food at Barracuda or spend a quarter as much at Taqueria Honoria, or spend the same amount for a vastly superior experience at Mamazul. This is a...

Do not eat here!! I REPEAT DO NOT EAT HERE !! I was excited to try this place out after our tour guy recomended it, but as soon as we got there. The sever took so long to give us our menu. Took soo long to give us our drinks that I had nothing to do but watch the severs run arround and attend to people. As I watched them cleaning tables and serving the complementary chips and veggies to others, I saw that they were reusing everything that was not consumed by previous customers. If the chips you were eating didn’t seem fresh?? Its because they werent. They were throwing all the uneaten chips into other baskets and passing them off as new. I even saw one server remove a tissue and some trashh off the chips and place them in a new container. He did the same with the veggies. On top of that no gloves were being worn as the same person touching the trash and throwing out things.. was the same person refilling all the customers chips and veggies. I was automatically disgusted. I confronted the waiter and he was shocked that I even mentioned it. He didn’t deny it , but insisted we stayed and eat. I didnt pay for our meals since they still hadn’t brought it to our tables but we payed for the drinks we had consumed. If this goes on with the appitizers , imagine what they do with the other food. GROSS...
