A secret jewel in Gueliz! From a foodie's perspective: an artistic, aesthetic, cozy, comfortable and comforting gem of a place - tender, thoughtful, and lovingly meticulous, from the entrance through the plant-filled hallways to the plein air patio, including a singularly heartfelt welcome and generous service, well-chosen dinnerware and accoutrements, surprising presentations, and exceptionally interesting decisions. Much thought given to each taste and texture, every bite a multi-layered experience.
It's so rare to find a place that feels at once authentic and homey, passionate and personable, as well as delightfully interesting in pushing the bounds of what each ingredient can do, each course a gift and yet absolutely without pretension. You can feel the three brothers' expertise and love of each other and their work (as a chef, French-trained patissier, and front host) flowing through the food, lingering in the air, and lighting up the walls.
I ordered three vegetarian starters: the curry briouates, the smoked eggplant, and the vegetable "dome," each one surprising with unexpected touches (the eggplant so tender and buttery, with crisp airy chickpea bites and dollups of goat cheese; the briouates flakey and simultaneously soft; the vegetable "dome" a beautifully presented, artfully wrapped gift in a little pond of light pesto) - all so playful and energetic. The desserts were surprisingly beautifully designed and very clear in their respective flavors and textures: one, a hazelnut "taco," and the other, a passion fruit delight.
I was not expecting at this casual pricepoint, such an aspirational experience (which they could fully charge 10x more for in the US!). Such interesting and fun interpretations of modern Moroccan dishes, still evolving I think! It was one of my very favorite restaurant experiences ever, over many decades and dozens of countries, and many meals both prestigious and...
Read moreOur visit at Azalai was by far the best and most intriguing/surprising dining experience in Marrakech, if not ever. We started off with a nice selection of freshly made/squeezed fruit drinks to pick two from For the starter we had the eggplant with a smokey note and a nice light harmony in the combination of all ingredients. The Tanjia was just a wonderful intense and full and pure beef taste, with the meat so tender and soft it felt like it was melting (metaphorically) on your tongue. We used the home made beautiful subtle spiced bread to soak up every drip of the stew. The coconut lentil risotto had lovingly full taste with a perfect harmony just giving us a big smile with every bite making us forget the surroundings and making us purely enjoy the very moment. The two desserts Pavlova and Lemon our way were a huge taste surprise that I don't want to spoil. They left us yearning for more, tickling and caressing almost all of our taste buds All in all we could feel the love for each ingredient and especially finding the right combinations to create a harmony in your mouth, that made us completely forget us everydays hectic life in Marrakech just being in the moment, feeling peace and love for food, which was absolutely supported by the welcoming atmosphere of the location. Thanks for this...
Read moreBeautiful interior, lots of plants but unfortunately, Uncomfortable seats, cramped seating, Tables was low, could not put your legs under if you are 5 feet 10 and above. Chairs had seated sideways as could not fit both for space and height of table.
I was not Aware but this place does not serve alcohol. The closest they have is a non-alcoholic San Miguel.
Food looked great but did not have the key flavours of what the main ingredient is.
The tacos de crab was average , found the tacos itself too thick and blend and the filling fell out as you are due to the tacos crumbling. Taste wise wasn’t that wow either- the accompaniment sauce was condensed milk; a very odd combination with the crab tacos!
The bonbon de pulpo- octopus again looked great, had tiny bits of octopus with an interesting a sauce but again no significant taste of octopus.
The aubergine fumee’ was good. Smoked well with pieces of mango and goats cheese on the top, which all worked well as a combination. An interesting dish.
The pastilla de gambas was a ball of fried pastry with some tiny shrimp, Disappointing dish as main taste was oil.
I commend the attempt to make food look good but has to taste good as well.
Service was average.
Booking recommended as busy but could not see anywhere to book online other...
