The historic photo (taken between 1885 to 1900) from the Amsterdam city archives is showing the old tabacco store on the first floor 'Sigaren magazijn van H.A. de Bloeme' but luckily you'll find since the begin of the 80ies Broodje Popov there for fresh artisinal sandwiches ("brood" is 🍞 and "broodje" is a small bread aka bun or roll with delicious stuff on it). Everything there is fresh & local and even the staff is fresh with their very friendly service and among the guests you'll find many (local) regulars that make the place extra 'gezellig' which is a Dutch expression hard to explain (kinda 'cosy'), but if you happen to be there on a rainy day with just few locals around you like me now you'll understand this key principle of Dutch society (back in the days they had one heated room in the center of the house and everybody had to gather there for reading, knitting and telling stories ... and everyone could enjoy the warmth ... and there was not room for argument so you better kept it "gezellig"). And it was of course 'héél lekker' 😋.

Pictures don’t do this place justice! I annoyingly didn’t peel back the top piece of bread to show off the steak but it smelled so good I couldn’t help but chow down! I got the classic steak sandwich as it was the best one selling, but my friend got the chicken club. Both sandwiches were massive and were filled up the brim. The steak I got was nicely fried, it was a minute steak but it wasn’t too tough so I could happily eat this up in minutes. It was full of cheese and a nice unique mayo (as well as lettuce) to make a really tasty well balanced sandwich. For the club sandwich, well let’s just put it this way, my friend was so full he felt as if we was pregnant :) Really lovely staff who were happy to help when I didn’t get my coffee at the same time as my food. Nice atmosphere outside but also in a good area to wander through the market or go to the local park with a handheld sandwich device. Thanks so much I’ll be back for the free coffee next year!

We were looking for a smash burger for a late breakfast–early lunch around 10:00, and this spot was perfect—really close to the Albert Cuyp Market. When we walked in, the place had this cool industrial vibe. They also sell other sandwiches. We mentioned we were spending the whole day in Amsterdam eating and asked if it was okay to share one smash burger between the three of us. They were super friendly and totally fine with it. When the food came, they had split it onto two plates, each with half a burger—looked great. The burger itself had a beautiful center—juicy patty, melty cheddar, soft brioche-style bun. I’d personally like it a bit saucier, but still solid. Service was 10/10, burger was a strong 8.5/10.

I was craving a Philly cheesesteak For some odd reason and I Came across what was supposed To be the best cheesesteak in Amsterdam. Located a short Ride from my location I had To have it. Upon ordering I was told There are other choices But hands down they are the best. From the Turkish bread to The process itself. Well I watched intently only To see ROOKIE MISTAKES one after the other. First Major Mistake The Roll was Cut in Half? NO ROLL IS CUT IN HALF, It’s sliced and opened staying ATTACHED so you can either Toast it or place it directly on top of the Melted Cheese and PILE of steak. Which brings Me to the second mistake. ONE SLICE of THINNED Rib Eye Slapped on a Grill entirely too Hot which brings me to the Third mistake. Onions go on The grill FIRST and peppers as well which brings me to the Fourth mistake they use some Fake pre_cooked sautéed onions That are not made FRESH. How difficult is it to fry onions In BUTTER which brings me To the Fifth mistake. Sans Fresh onions and peppers this MINUTE steak was chopped and Screwed not like Houston more like (FKD) it stayed on the Grill 7 minutes too long and What I ended up with is a WELL WELL DONE taste of Ribeye Steak slapped On A Sliding yet delicious Roll, he didn’t lie about the Bread. IT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT. There’s an old American commercial that simply asks ‘Where’s the Meat’ It must have been left behind in PHILLY.

and that costs 16 euros. btw Genos nor Pats is the best. Both are Basic in taste but offer the Hype and Battle as they are directly Across the Street from each other. Angelos is the...

Ok guys, came here with no expectation. I was in the area and wanted a sandwich. I got the chopped cheese. Guys, wow! So good, so juicy and well balanced . The bread is very good as well. It really tasted like a Harlem bodega from NYC chopped cheese. Fantastic! It was so good that I also came the next day to get the star of the show - yhe Philly Cheesesteak. I added some jalapenos on it and wow! Meat is very good, melts in your mouth - perfect juicyness, perfect kick from the jalapenos. Do not sleep on this place - give it a try when yoh are in Amsterdam. You will thank me later!

Staff is very nice and prices are very very good.

Later edit - came here 1 year later again

I was in Amsterdam for 4 days and ordered from Broodje Popov twice in that time. Let me tell you, this place is a true gem and exceeded every expectation I had again. The sandwiches are packed with flavor, incredibly fresh, and so easy to eat. I tried again the chopped cheese, the Philly cheesesteak, and also gave a chance to the tuna salad sandwich, and every one of them was absolutely flawless—probably the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

If you’re in Amsterdam, trust me: go to this place or order on Uber Eats. You won’t regret it. Honestly, it was the most flavorful food I had during my stay, even compared to some upscale restaurants. Keep up the great work, guys! I can’t wait to be back...

"Broodje" is no longer a bad word! Popov saves the day!

I have lived in Amsterdam for nearly 7 years, almost all of it just two blocks away from Broodje Popov and am devastated that I did not discover this place sooner. Yes, I had passed the door and seen the lines...I had even notice the name pop up in a variety of "must visit" eateries in Amsterdam. However, I must be forgiven; as an American I quickly disavowed eating anything called a "broodje" as it seemed to signify nothing more than a single slice of cheese between two thick slices of brown bread. Even the more "gourmet" shops that offered more than cheese as an option, seemed to adhere to some unspoken rule that the filling should not comprise more than 10% of the sandwich.

FINALLY I have found a "broodje" worthy of filling my lunch sack! The sandwiches here are all amazing; the staff helpful, attentive and work with an efficient sense of purpose to get you your broodje quick and in your hands while it's still warm. Quality ingredients and a menu that has enough options to fill the week but not so many you need to "study" before you order. Can't recommend highly enough.

Alas I have one complaint - they close at 16:00. Clearly it would be a step too far in the world of "broodje's" to eat...
