After disliking the delays in Brasserie Nel (and being turned away from a near-empty Huyschkaemer for no reservation), we just happened across this gem.
Internally, it's not a large place but had a very traditional decor with soft comfortable lighting - I can see this becoming a favourite with locals as it feels like sitting in someone's front room. Despite the size it has quite a comprehensive range of meals and I opted for pea soup, (Snert) which is a thick pea and ham broth with smoked sausage, a traditional dish and very warming in the cold winter months.
Most of my party stated they preferred this over Brasserie Nel - a greater range of meals and quicker service (but it IS a smaller place), and the prices were much cheaper - around 4-7 euro per meal.
I asked about bringing a larger party in later on during the week; although they said there was no need to do a booking, the next day when we arrived for lunch they had reserved a few tables to one side for us. There was a minor issue with a meal going wayward - it was ordered but not delivered, and when it arrived the cook also brought up a couple of pots of chips by way of apology, admitting blame with misreading the orders - in all, it was a slight delay but didn't really detract from the overall experience.
Will definitely look at eating here again: it felt quite a relaxing place, very welcoming, and their customer service did...
Read moreThis cafe has a lot of great outdoor seating. However, today was cloudy and a bit chilly, so my friend and I sat inside. This was a big mistake. The staff made a ridiculous clanging noise when handling plates and glasses. I couldn't help but wonder if they were angry about something. Do you make that much noise while working normally? The delivery man (probably) also made a banging noise that reverberated throughout the room when folding plastic boxes. It was awful. I didn't think the staff cared about making the customers of the cafe feel comfortable. My friend and I had to stop our conversation every time they made such a horrible noise. I think we should have told them to be quiet. I will never go to this cafe again. I've lived in the Netherlands for 20 years and I've never had such a bad experience. All the cafes in the Netherlands are very nice and I always enjoy them and really relax.I have to say that this cafe is the worst cafe in the...
Read moreFine service and drinks but the bathroom in this place has to be the most disgusting and unhygienic 1 square meter in all of Amsterdam. The urinal is located mere centimeters away from the sink which is full of pee as well. It is impossible to wash your hands if someone is there let alone dry them without almost touching/being flashed by someones penis(quite frankly awful to subject your customers to this, especially women) and it is also impossible to exit the toilet if someone is using the urinal as the door wont fully open. Mixed bathrooms are not an issue, as long as there is adequate space for everyone, which this place definitely does not provide. I am absolutely perplexed as to how this place acquired a license to operate with a bathroom like that, someone ought to report them to the health...
