If you are unfamiliar with Google reviews, one is asked to provide a 'number of stars' rating for food... What a joke for this place. For me, and anyone reading this, it was, and should be, about the beer. I have no idea if they even serve food (perhaps some simple meat or cheese should be about it if they do), but for those who go in to a place as good as this to have food, when so much good beer is on offer...well, they should be shown the door.
I found myself here because of the great fire of Heathrow, which meant my inbound flight was diverted to Amsterdam and I had an enforced stopover....well, as much enforced as one might view it as.
It is close to a British pub, both in terms of the staff and the patrons. A great mix of the 'me'-type (there for a good solid sampling of a wonderful range of beers) as well as loud chatty groups and down to couples, flirting with each other as well as any number of beers with 6, 7, 8 and occasionally even 9% alcohol content.
It is a beerily wonderful place; depressing only in that I had a couple of hours there before retreating to sleep before getting an early train to Schiphol and a return to the...
Read moreCafé Gollem is a beer enthusiast's paradise. As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm and cozy atmosphere that instantly made me feel at home. The dimly lit interior, adorned with vintage beer memorabilia, created the perfect ambiance for a relaxing evening of beer exploration.
What truly sets Café Gollem apart is its extensive and impressive beer menu. It's a haven for beer connoisseurs, boasting an array of options that span the entire beer spectrum. From crisp and refreshing lagers to complex and rich Belgian ales, they have it all. The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable and eager to guide you through their selection, making recommendations based on your preferences.
During my visit, I couldn't resist trying some of their local craft brews. The Dutch craft beer scene is thriving, and Café Gollem showcases this beautifully. I sampled a few IPAs, each bursting with unique hop profiles and distinct flavors. If you're into sour beers or stouts, they have an equally impressive lineup that will satisfy even the most...
Read moreVisited on a relatively quiet Saturday night. I asked the barman (who I took for the head barman/manager by virtue of his flat cap) for an IPA from the tap, and a glass of warm water for my friend. My request for a glass of warm water was first met with incredulity; which having done bar work myself for many years I had some sympathy for.
Perhaps the barman in question was less experienced however as this simple request proved beyond him. He handed me a glass of freshly boiled water from the kettle, and didn't make any effort to conceal his disdain when I asked him to pour some out and refill with cold water to avoid scalding my friend.
Upon handing over the now slightly less than boiling glass of water, sir flat cap turned away from me so I couldn't even thank him for this half-hearted gesture. I subsequently heard him shouting obscenities at another customer however so it's entirely possible he was having an off night.
Won't be coming back, though I thought deserving of one star for the truly...
