Omakase Experience in Amsterdam – A Mixed Plate.
Before stumbling upon a TikTok promo, I had no idea what an Omakase Experience even was. But the way this place marketed itself, complete with massive tuna displays and sushi artistry, was nothing short of captivating. It set my expectations sky-high. Sadly, that’s also where the first cracks began to show.
Let’s start with the logistics.
After booking, we received multiple reminders to arrive early, or risk losing our spot at the table. Fair enough. So we showed up ahead of time… only to be seated at the farthest possible table, basically in the hallway. Right next to the exit. Not exactly the immersive omakase journey they promised. Meanwhile, people were strolling in, 15, 20, or even 30 minutes late, and still got seated, some with better spots than ours. It felt like we followed the rules just to be placed in the least desirable corner - surrounded by a slamming fridge door (bar is just behind your table), foot traffic, and a chef who only reached our table for the 11th out of 14 courses.
Now, about the storytelling:
I really wanted to be transported through each dish. That’s part of what makes omakase special, right? Unfortunately, the chef assigned to explain the dishes seemed soft-spoken to the point where we barely caught a word. It wasn’t loud or chaotic - just… hard to hear and emotionally flat. A little more projection and storytelling confidence would go a long way.
But here’s where the experience truly redeemed itself:
the food. It was beyond imagination. From delicately sliced sashimi to flame-seared cuts that melted in your mouth, each course was executed with stunning precision. The ingredients were top-tier, and the preparation? Artful. Every bite was a new texture, a new flavour, a new "wow." Drinks were just as thoughtfully selected - we had tea, beer, and sake, all perfectly complementing the journey.
Would I recommend it? For the food, 100%. It’s a flavour explosion. But if you're in it for the full sensory experience - the ambiance, the storytelling, the “as seen on TikTok” drama - just know it may fall short depending on where you're seated and who’s presenting.
Pro tip: Ask in advance about your table location and don’t expect the tuna show unless you’re there on a very...
Read moreWe booked for 8 PM on Friday. We arrived 5 minutes early but it took us 10 minutes to find the place because there's no sign. The address provided led us to a pancake place (Moak), which even has signage and branding outside. For a moment, we thought we were being scammed. We had already paid online, and there was no phone number to contact.
We even rang the neighbors’ doorbells—nothing. Finally, a kind stranger asked if we were looking for the omakase and pointed us in the right direction. There was a big line of people waiting outside, but no one from the staff said anything. I eventually managed to get inside and ask someone—we had a reservation for 8. They just said, “It’s fine,” because apparently the earlier group didn’t want to leave.
We were finally seated at almost 8:30 and dinner started then.
The two people serving were very sweet and friendly, but that was about it. There was almost no explanation about the dishes (and I’ve been to several omakases). The sushi was average at best. The rice was too mushy and often overpowered the fish. Honestly, I don’t get the hype.
The place has potential. The staff is kind, and the room is nice in a minimalist way. But people are packed into small two-person tables, very close to each other. It gets loud, and the whole thing feels a bit chaotic.
I know €60 for omakase is a bargain, but it’s not worth it if you’re looking for a true omakase experience. If the food had been great, I could overlook the rest. But honestly, only three pieces with fatty tuna stood out—and even those were just “good,” not amazing. Nothing really wowed me.
I hope you take this feedback in a constructive way and use it to make improvements. As of now, I can’t recommend it. For just a few euros more, there are far better options in...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place, however, my friend and I felt a bit scammed when we went. We opted for the 10 course menu. Firstly, the first two “courses” were cucumbers and cabbage. Secondly, they forgot one of our courses (please see photos) and we only realized once we had already left. Thirdly, we were so hungry after the 10 “courses” that we had to get three more pieces of sushi. Lastly, we were still so hungry after the dinner that we went to Bar Bellini for dessert (they did not offer dessert at the Omakase).
The chefs seemed really sweet and I don’t want to leave a bad review, however, I want to be fully transparent. The quality of the fish was good, especially the tuna! So that was a really nice bonus. It was also nice to see the chefs cooking infront of you. However, overall I don’t think it is worth going to this restaurant. I think if they review the menu and make some adjustments it could be a really enjoyable place! I think they are relatively new so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I have been to other omakase restaurants in Amsterdam that far exceeded my expectations and that I would return to, this not being one of them. I wish the team the best of luck in their journey and I will give it another try if I see some modifications in the structure...
