Been there on Valentine's Day with my love who used to work there. Everyone was so friendly. Don't know if that is because of the connection or normal, but if this is how they are normally with costumers I can surely recommend going there! Because of Valentine's Day they played mostly romantic music from Celine Dion. The restaurant was eventually completely full, which is always a good sign (people come to good restaurants, bad restaurants don't attract people). Also a lot of African people which also is a sign that the food is authentic and good (most Chinese restaurants have food you can't find in China which causes Chinese to stay away for example, seeing African people in an African restaurant is a good thing). The food was delicious. Of course my love had ordered more which I could take with me, which I ate the following day with dad. It was all so jummy! Also I love the way the restaurant looks. As we Dutchies say: klein maar fijn. Although small in size and not attractive from the outside, it's a great restaurant, great staff, great food. It is the inside that matters here. I will definitely come...
Read moreDefinitely a great recommendation! This was a first timer. Cozy place with seating for around 20 people. Food is ordered at the counter, but the staff will serve your food. Ordered a nostalgic tasting of Fanta (the orange one), and a variety of dishes including the pounded yam with egusi, and jollof rice.
For me the meat dishes were outstanding. The jollof rice with chicken stew, and the goat pepper soup are two dishes I will probably go back for. The chicken stew reminded me of butter chicken/chicken tikka masala. The goat pepper soup is just wow for people who love spice (and some game).
The pounded yam was the first time, it has a plain natural taste, so I would recommend combining it with a stew. The tomato meat stews I definitely recommend.
You can eat most dishes with cutlery, but it's common practice to eat with your hands (you can wash your hands at the front of the...
Read moreA Nigerian restaurant with a difference. I was visiting from the UK, and after trying a few restaurants in Amsterdam with mixed reviews, I was referred to Obalende. The service was okay (not great), but the food was promptly prepared and had that authentic Nigerian taste, but with an extra zing. I do not usually go on about other people's cooking with my wife present, but for this I will shout out loud. It was brilliant and by far the best African food I have eaten outside Nigeria. The price, I found, was surprisingly quite cheap and the portions were very generous. I am afraid to say this, but it makes the Obalende restaurants in London quite ordinary...
