Señor Mostaschio is a small and quaint restaurant. It plays wonderful music, tipo ranchero que se hace sentir mas original. Ricardo is the server and he was a gentleman through and through. When I first came into the restaurant he came across a bit rude and sarcastic but, I imagine that is just his personality. I am in no way dismissing or justifying his attitude but, I can’t imagine he being any other way. He brought life to the otherwise slow restaurant.
I started with the guacamole and chips. I asked for queso fresco to be added to the order. It provided a creamy saltiness that I hadn’t experienced in years since I was last home in Southern California. It also was served with a habanero salsa. Bright, yellow and very creamy, maybe a 3 out of 10 in terms of level of spicyness. (NOTE: This is based off of my own level of tolerance to spiciness.) Ricardo mentioned that the salsa was spicy, unaware to the fact that I was raised to enjoy spicy food and if it wasn’t spicy, my taste buds wouldn’t be satisfied with the less-than flavor.
There was only two people working at the time of my visit. The owner, I assumed, and Ricardo, who was the server, bartender, bus boy and cook. This meant that service was a bit slow but, not terrible overall.
I asked for the Carnita tacos and the wet burrito for my main course.
I started with the 3 tacos and they were divine. The pork was drenched in a type of red sauce that wasn’t spicy but, definitely savory. These weren’t your typical Mexican carnitas, you know, the ones that are deep fried and covered in salsa, cebolla, and cilantro. No, these were much different but still, overall delicious. I give these a 7 out of 10. They would have been scored higher but, for the cost of 14.75 euros, you only get three bite sized tacos. I’m not kidding, I was able to finish each one within 2 bites.
Next, I had the wet burrito with chicken inside. This monstrous burrito was not bad. The chicken was a bit dry, and the red rice a bit plain. I give this burrito a 5 out of 10 overall. Its presentation and ease of digesting is its saving grace. I’ve had better in other countries such as Korea and England. Italy has yet to surprise me with a better competitor so, this one takes 6th place in terms of burritos I’ve hade during my 8 years of consistent traveling.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for some above average Mexican food just outside the city center whilst in Amsterdam, you should definitely check out...
Read moreWe have always been very happy after food and drinks at Senor Mostachio up until yesterday. The waiter was clearly distracted because he got my cocktail order wrong both times it was served with vodka or tequila each time even though we asked for rum both times, the tacos arrived however the burrito was forgotten and after a while of waiting I asked him to cancel it if it was not yet prepared and replace it with tacos since they would be done quicker. He kept on forgot the tap water we asked for initially and when we asked for it again he just gave us two glasses of water, one with less than half water. The last cocktail I returned and asked for Rum from the barman arrived very watery even though it was supposed to be a slushy. The tacos were very wet and falling apart, could not pick them up, had to use fork and knife. At the end whilst we were still drinking our drinks, the waiter kept on asking us what else do we want and constantly checking to clear things off the table, he then shortly returned asking us to leave cause its a small restaurant and needs the table in 10 mins. We were so shocked by terrible service, this was very rude and the quality clearly went down. Not sure if it was due to overbooking and understaffing but we paid 106 eur between the two of us to be kicked out. Nobody made it clear that there was a limit on how long we are allowed to stay there so we didnt bother to order another round or desert. The waiter offered us to go sit somewhere else if we wanted to order another drink however there was nowhere else to sit so that was a...
Read moreHad a very unfortunate experience dining here through Uber Eats. I ordered a sea food burrito that was 90% rice, no guac, almost no black beans and no salsa and was nothing close to a fulfilling Tex-Mex/So-Cal/Mexican burrito.
To the other guy (Jacob H.’s) review that claims if you don’t like the food here, you don’t like Mexican.... I’ve lived/worked in Mexico, lived in a border town in Texas, and in Southern California (25 mins from Mexican border) for over 10 years so I know Mexican and Tex-Mex and this ain’t it. Instead of putting whole ingredients like avocado in the burrito there was an off-putting green slime that was blatantly not guac. There were probably 10 micro-sized black beans in the burrito total.
The tortilla was also way off from a traditional Mexican flour tortilla.
It’s a shame because in California you can get an authentic Mexican burrito for $7/8 and it will be worlds better than this €14 burrito.
We also ordered a taco bowl that was also mainly rice with some shredded iceberg lettuce. They included maybe 5 ml of sauce for the entire bowl. It was a small dribble.
Another disappointment was that for their chips and salsa, they give us maybe 10 chips. And another tiny size thing of salsa. Hugely disappointing for any place that prides themselves on...
