This was our first try of Indonesian food whilst on holiday in Amsterdam.
Tasty food, nice and spicy- a different kind of spicy than we're used to, as we're Indian. Really enjoyed the spicy chicken in red pepper sauce and chicken in yellow curry. Some dishes were maybe just lacking a pinch of salt and the only downside was the mixed veg dish being a bit bland, but the spicy aubergine and potatoes made up for it.
This isn't a proper restaurant, it's a more casual cafe-like takeaway place. So there's very limited seating inside. We went on a Sunday and it was so busy that the queue was lined up outside, so we decided to go back to the hotel and order in. (Worth keeping in mind for Friday & Weekend). Can't comment on the service and atmosphere.
They have an allergen menu on their website that you can translate into English: this was really helpful as not being familiar with the food, you can see what's suitable to eat, considering we needed to cater to vegetarian, gluten-free, and no seafood for each person. Make sure you scroll to the right to see the whole list of allergens.
Order-wise, they have set meals that you can choose (It's not split into starters, mains, sides & desserts like most places). For example, one of the meals is described as; basic, 2 vegetables, 2 meats, chicken satay and egg. If you look at the allergen menu, this means you can choose one of the rice dishes as your base, 2 dishes from the veg list, 2 from the chicken or meat list and chicken satay and an egg comes included.
It would've been helpful if the food was labelled as we had to figure it out and I know it was probably to stop the food from leaking out, but the cling film on top of the food was unnecessary.
A great first experience of Indonesian food and we even had enough left over for our trip...

We chose this restaurant because it is a 6 min bike ride from all the Museums, open for lunch, and had SO many positive reviews on Google. Surprisingly, it wasnāt on any āmust eatā lists from our research..
The positive is that the food was seasoned well and tastes authentic however, the cons definitely overshadow the pros. When you enter you notice the dishes are all on a hot table, which isnāt a problem for me because Iāve had wonderful meals coming from hot tables - the issue is once you choose what you want, the staff will MICROWAVE your meal. The items are clearly not fresh and youāll notice immediately because all the stewed meats are incredibly dry (how is this possible??).
After we finished our meal we noticed that the owner offered desserts to another table⦠in exchange for a review!! Which makes so much sense as to why this restaurant had 6k reviews with an average of 4.9 stars LOL.
We immediately got our coats and left cause we didnāt want to be trapped in that awkward situation.
Super disappointed cause this was our only Indonesian meal in Amsterdam and it was not good. We unfortunately didnāt have time to go anywhere else :(
So a fair warning to all tourists with a limited number of days here, DO NOT EAT HERE! The...

Toko Bersama is easily one of the most generous, authentic, and heartwarming dining experiences Iāve had in the city.
From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was being welcomed into someoneās home ā and thatās exactly what this place is. The owner, who came to Amsterdam from Sumatra in 1991, brings not only deep culinary heritage but also genuine hospitality thatās hard to come by. He even gifted me a slice of his homemade kek lapis ā a delicately spiced, layered Sumatran cake ā as a parting treat. Small gesture, big heart.
The plate I had was a feast: Fragrant rice crowned with crisp fried shallots, flavourful beef rendang tender to perfection, crispy ayam goreng with a delicious chili glaze, juicy satay smothered in rich, velvety peanut sauce, sayur lodeh for that veggie goodness, a sambal egg with deep, bold flavours, and of course, crunchy kerupuk to tie it all together.
Every single item was rich, well-balanced, and clearly made with care ā generous portions too! You truly get more than what you pay for here.
This is not just food ā this is tradition, soul, and love on a plate. Toko Bersama deserves all the recognition it can get. Iāll be recommending it to anyone who wants to experience real Indonesian food in...
