We had dinner here and reserved a table the day before (mostly because we thought the place was going to be very popular and authentic because of the newspaper article in the window). I have to add though that when we reserved the table, the member of staff didn't even write down our name or anything. This should have been a red flag in hindsight perhaps.
On arrival, the service was friendly and the boss himself came to greet us and took our order which was nice. However, after our initial order, things took a turn. The restaurant was far from busy (all in all probably had around ten guests in there, two-three of whom already had their food) and even though we specifically asked the owner to ask the kitchen to please not put any fresh coriander/cilantro on top of any of the dishes, when they arrived they were all full of coriander. We had waited for a considerable amount of time until the food came (around 45 minutes) and when it did, it was simply disappointing and tasted bland and watered down. None of us were able to taste any discernible flavours or spices or any kind of nuances. My parents especially have had Indian foods in many countries (specifically European countries) and love Indian cuisine and they were absolutely disappointed by the lack of flavours at Rice N Spice.
We ate maybe 20-30% of the food (only because we were so hungry because of the long wait) and when the waiter came to check on us, I told him we were disappointed by the food. Unfortunately, he didn't ask why or apologise at all and just promptly presented us with the bill of around 115€ which is quite hefty. The boss didn't come to check back either after taking our initial order.
Overall, we were very disappointed with our experience at Rice n Spice. It's unfortunate we didn't spend my mum's birthday at a more flavoursome establishment that was...
Read moreI recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at Rice and Spice Den in Hagg, and I must say, it was a complete disappointment. As someone who loves Indian cuisine and appreciates the flavors and authenticity it has to offer, this restaurant failed to deliver on every front.
First and foremost, the food lacked any discernible flavors. It was bland and lacked the complexity and spices that are characteristic of Indian cuisine. It felt like they were just going through the motions without putting any effort into creating a truly enjoyable dining experience.
Speaking of authenticity, it was sorely missing from our meal. The dishes we ordered seemed like cheap imitations of Indian food rather than the real deal. The flavors were watered down, and it felt like they were trying to cater to a non-Indian palate, completely disregarding the essence of the cuisine.
To add insult to injury, the prices at Rice and Spice Den were exorbitant for what we received. We expected to pay a premium for quality Indian food, but what we got was far from it. It felt like a money-grab, with no justification for the inflated prices.
Overall, my experience at Rice and Spice Den was highly disappointing. The lack of flavors, the absence of authenticity, and the unjustifiably high prices left a sour taste in my mouth. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a genuine Indian dining experience. Save your money and seek out a more reputable establishment that truly understands and respects the art of...
Read moreFood was great. We had the paneer kadhai and the rogan josh which were both absolutely wonderful. Lamb was perfectly fall apart tender and the gravy had just a hint of spice. Be aware that because these restaurant is more Desi style that everything will be sweeter. This was especially the case in the pilau rice and mint chutney which had a synthetic green colour and no spice at all which was disappointing. Despite the merits of the food the service was AWFUL. We got seated about the same time as another larger group. We had to wait 30 minutes to even order being ignored several times and repeatedly told someone (one of three waiting staff) would be coming soon. They did only after this larger group had received their starters already. After finally ordering and finishing our starters we again had to wait another 45 minutes for our mains. We were starving by the time it had arrived and were frankly quite disappointed for the portion sizes considering the price. 24 euros for a 1 person curry…not enough to share. We also ordered two new beers with it. These never arrived. As soon as we finished we just got up to pay because we knew that if we waited for them to come to us it would’ve taken another century or so. We found out they hadn’t even registered our drink order. The staff was chaotic and unorganised which is sad and very disappointing considering the food. Would not dine in again...
