I wouldn’t even want to give this place a 1-star rating. My friends and I traveled from Auckland City specifically to try the food here, but our experience was incredibly disappointing. We arrived at Barilla Dumpling House around 10:30 PM, and the atmosphere was far from welcoming. It took until 10:40 PM for a staff member to take our order, and when she did, she was extremely rude. As we started ordering, she became even more impatient. After placing our first two orders, she abruptly told us that the restaurant was closing at 11 PM, insisting that we hurry up—something that was never communicated to us earlier. Her attitude was completely unprofessional. If she had politely informed us about the closing time, we would have understood. But instead, her rudeness ruined our experience, and we decided to leave. Thankfully, we found a much better dining experience at Flavour House Restaurant instead. Very, very bad service from Barilla Dumpling House—definitely not recommending it!

Still one of our favourite places to have dumplings. We ordered the pork and mushroom fillings, I personally prefer them fried as the outside is nice and crispy. The filling was flavourful, and the dumplings were plump and juicy. The steamed buns were also delicious, the outside being fluffy and also stuffed with yummy pork mince. The sweet rice cakes were a favourite, light and crispy coating with a soft chewy centre. It's sweet but not too sweet, the perfect balance. The fried mantou was nice, too, the condensed milk added a good sweetness and flavour to them. We also had green beans with pork ribs and a bakchoy soup (not pictured); those were good but nothing special. The waitress was friendly. The restaurant itself felt a little run-down but overall doesn't take away too much from the dining experience. The restrooms are upstairs next to the main entrance, where there are more tables available, somewhat of a quirky layout in my opinion.

Overall the dumplings were OK. I got the fried dumplings and the skin was quite moist/soft for being a fried dumpling. We also got the steamed one and it tasted better with the soup inside so would recommend it more than the fried. The size of the dumplings were also good and filling. 20 pieces is enough for lunch/dinner. We also ordered the sweet&sour soup which had too much pepper inside and wasnt sour enough. It also lacked some "punch" to it, where other traditional sweet&sour soups would have. The color of the soup also indicates this because it was more pale brown, rather than a bit more reddish/orangish which is more traditional Chinese sweet&sour soups. All in all it was good to swing by and try it out, but I think there are better dumpling areas to try out in Auckland as well.

If I could rate them as ZERO I would. Our first dish, which was just fried rice came just minutes after we're sat. (NOTE: This was on a plate, as in the servers know that we're dining in... more on this later). That's great and all but after 45 minutes we still haven't got anything else! We've ordered 5 dishes in total and we only got the fried rice! We've asked the servers TWICE about when we'll get the other dishes and he just kept asking us "What did you order" and never really gave a reply! At about 50minutes in one of the people in our group came to the counter to check on the other dishes. The lady said it'll be here in 2 minutes. Well 2 minutes became 10 minutes. And then a server gave us 2 takeaway containers of dumplings. We told her that we wanted to have the food IN the restaurant, and not takeaway. She opened one of the containers and took the other container away. 10 minutes later, we received our other orders all in takeaway boxes. We told the lady AGAIN that we didn't want them takeaway. SHE INSISTED THAT WE DID and she also got one of the servers and told him off in front of us. We told her it's okay, and we just opened the takeaway containers and ate at our table.

A little while later, we could hear all the staff gossiping about how we apparently asked for takeaways. They were all gossiping in Mandarin but unfortunately for them, one of the people in our group can understand them.

Very bad customer service. Not one of the staff apologised or said anything about the whole confusion. You shouldn't be blaming your customers for mistakes that your staff made.

Also, please don't talk about your customers in front of them. You never know if they can...

On a Tuesday night it was desperately busy, always a good sign. We didn't make reservations but they seated four quickly, I didn't see anyone get turned way while we were there.

Jasmine tea served free as we were seated, it was delicate and delicious.

The menu is huge and everything I saw served looked delicious. Wish I got some of the fried beans, they were tempura battered and I suffered wistful envy as they floated past. The servings were also HUGE. 20 dumplings for $14 NZD was a large plate covered and heaped. We ordered 3 plates, beef/onion, beef/cashew, pork/cabbage. The beef was delicious but, in a bizarre twist of dinner theatre, the pork dumplings only landed on our table for a few seconds before they were whisked away and served to another table... No matter because 40 dumplings were plenty for 3 adults one 2-year-old. I maintain I could have finished the other 20 but that would have been a test of personal resilience and stomach elasticity rather than a pleasantly sated feeling. They accepted that we missed one plate from the order and once we explained the staff amended our bill down.

I don't accept the other reviews that the service was necessary "horrible"... They were run off their feet and focused on volume and efficiency. It's not a "silver service" establishment and doesn't pretend to be. It's a proper nosh-house.

Busy, chaotic, curt service, delicious,...
