My son and his family lives in Christchurch and he's been talking about this Afgan place and would take us there if we're in Christchurch. A must-try spot in Christchurch! There’s no menu—just walk in and let them know how many people are dining or ordering takeaway. They usually open around 5:30 p.m., and there’s always a long line, so give yourself extra time. The food is simple but absolutely delicious—choose chicken, lamb, or a mix, served with tasty rice and curry. It’s great value for money and always consistent. We ordered 3 servings for 5 people, and it was more than enough. Don’t expect a typical restaurant setup. You get your own drinks, plates, and cutlery. If you're dining in, you can skip the takeaway queue—just find a seat and order at the counter. We always get an extra serving to enjoy for lunch the next day. Tip: Join their Facebook group to check if they’re open. Long wait, but totally worth it!

We visited here due to a video I saw on the internet and the big hype. There was a massive queue outside (we waited an hour) but we were told afterwards that if you are dining in you could just go straight in and they would serve you straight away so no need to wait!! It is a set meal and you just tell them how many people are eating- it is really generous portions and $21 each person so I think it’s a great price The chicken kebab and lamb kebab were really nice, the rice was good too. Team is really nice too The decor is like going back in time and feels like you are at a family members house which is really comforting I wouldn’t say the food is as incredible as the hype but I would say it is still nice and I recommend that people try there and support this great man who runs this business If you want to go, you do need to go onto the Facebook page ‘is AFG open today’ and you can see there if it’s open

This little Afghan spot in Christchurch has a menu so simple it’ll cure your indecisiveness instantly — because you literally have no choice. Just three things: Charcoal-grilled meat on chicken rice, with salad or curry. But here’s the magic: $20 gets you a massive plate, big enough to feed both you and your friend’s emotional baggage. The grilled meat? Smoky, juicy, crispy on the edges — happiness even for people with dental issues. The chicken rice? So fragrant it should be illegal — the cat at the next table probably wanted a bite. Salad is fresh and cuts the richness perfectly. The curry isn’t the hospital-trip kind of spicy — it’s gentle, warm, like getting hugged by someone’s Afghan mum. The decor’s not the highlight — the food is. This place proves one thing: Fewer choices = fewer mistakes. One bite and you’ll start wondering if the owner’s secretly running a food charity.

Seeing the awesome google review, thought we will try this place out during our visit from Melbourne. Went in yesterday, sadly however, the food ran out. We were having mixed feelings - both disappointment and impressed. Finished up site seeing very quickly at Akoroa and came early to try this place again today. The queue was all the way to the nearest convenience store at 5Pm and store wasn't even open at this time (opens at 5.30pm). After waiting for 1.5 hours finally got the chance to order. From my understanding, there is no menu - they ask "order is for how many people and if it for dine-in or take away". We get rice, chicken curry, chicken kebab and lamb kebab. Both taste and quantity are impeccable, my personnel favorite are the rice and curry. Cost for a person is $21. Ensure you take cash with you (for the correct amount as they don't have change). Our cards didn't work at this place - both credit and debit VISA cards (he mentioned that it might be because these cards are issued from Australia). Due to this, iI had to walk to the nearest ATM to take some cash out. However, since this place doesn't have any change to pay back, they asked me to take out AUD $2. Made me feel very much embarrassed especiallyin front of all these people and couldn't get to enjoy the food as I...

There’s a lot of hype and a strong cult following around this place, to the point where any criticism—no matter how valid—is often dismissed. While the food is affordable and the chef is genuinely kind, that alone doesn’t make up for the overall experience. The cleanliness is a major concern; the tables are consistently dirty, and the hygiene standards seem questionable. It’s surprising that Christchurch Council has granted this place a good safety certificate given its condition? I don’t know even if they have one. What’s most disappointing is the behavior of the cashier—specifically the individual with a Mohawk and green jacket. His attitude is consistently unpleasant, and he appears to treat people differently based on familiarity and ethnicity. He’s noticeably more courteous to Caucasian customers and those he knows, while being dismissive and rude to South Asian patrons he’s unfamiliar with. This kind of discriminatory behavior is unacceptable. I remember when Abdul used to run the place solo—he always greeted customers with a smile, and the experience was far more pleasant. Since the business has grown busier, the food quality has declined, the cleanliness has worsened, and the overall experience has deteriorated. Only plus left is that the food is...

Quality and quantity was great a few years ago when he had started a few years ago and no one would walk into this restaurant except a few ppl on regular bases. These ppl made the restaurant famous by word of mouth.

Now that he I'd busy he proiotizes kiwis over any other ppl who have been standing in line for hours and would give ur order to them in front of you and make u wait.

Wait times no less than 1 hr but if ur white less than 10 min.

I had not visited this place because of his this attitude and was craving his greesy food after not visiting for more than a year.

Found no changes in his style of work and me and my wife were queued with 15 ppl in front of us and the line had not moved for more than a hour where as kiwi families where cutting the queue and ordering at the front of the queue or dining in and were served first while the rest of the stupid ppl waited feeling like they are getting a hand out and also paid for it.

This time I decided I will never come back to this place if I have a little bit of...
