Seeing the awesome google review, thought we will try this place out during our visit from Melbourne. Went in yesterday, sadly however, the food ran out. We were having mixed feelings - both disappointment and impressed. Finished up site seeing very quickly at Akoroa and came early to try this place again today. The queue was all the way to the nearest convenience store at 5Pm and store wasn't even open at this time (opens at 5.30pm). After waiting for 1.5 hours finally got the chance to order. From my understanding, there is no menu - they ask "order is for how many people and if it for dine-in or take away". We get rice, chicken curry, chicken kebab and lamb kebab. Both taste and quantity are impeccable, my personnel favorite are the rice and curry. Cost for a person is $21. Ensure you take cash with you (for the correct amount as they don't have change). Our cards didn't work at this place - both credit and debit VISA cards (he mentioned that it might be because these cards are issued from Australia). Due to this, iI had to walk to the nearest ATM to take some cash out. However, since this place doesn't have any change to pay back, they asked me to take out AUD $2. Made me feel very much embarrassed especiallyin front of all these people and couldn't get to enjoy the food as I...
Read moreThere’s a lot of hype and a strong cult following around this place, to the point where any criticism—no matter how valid—is often dismissed. While the food is affordable and the chef is genuinely kind, that alone doesn’t make up for the overall experience. The cleanliness is a major concern; the tables are consistently dirty, and the hygiene standards seem questionable. It’s surprising that Christchurch Council has granted this place a good safety certificate given its condition? I don’t know even if they have one. What’s most disappointing is the behavior of the cashier—specifically the individual with a Mohawk and green jacket. His attitude is consistently unpleasant, and he appears to treat people differently based on familiarity and ethnicity. He’s noticeably more courteous to Caucasian customers and those he knows, while being dismissive and rude to South Asian patrons he’s unfamiliar with. This kind of discriminatory behavior is unacceptable. I remember when Abdul used to run the place solo—he always greeted customers with a smile, and the experience was far more pleasant. Since the business has grown busier, the food quality has declined, the cleanliness has worsened, and the overall experience has deteriorated. Only plus left is that the food is...
Read moreQuality and quantity was great a few years ago when he had started a few years ago and no one would walk into this restaurant except a few ppl on regular bases. These ppl made the restaurant famous by word of mouth.
Now that he I'd busy he proiotizes kiwis over any other ppl who have been standing in line for hours and would give ur order to them in front of you and make u wait.
Wait times no less than 1 hr but if ur white less than 10 min.
I had not visited this place because of his this attitude and was craving his greesy food after not visiting for more than a year.
Found no changes in his style of work and me and my wife were queued with 15 ppl in front of us and the line had not moved for more than a hour where as kiwi families where cutting the queue and ordering at the front of the queue or dining in and were served first while the rest of the stupid ppl waited feeling like they are getting a hand out and also paid for it.
This time I decided I will never come back to this place if I have a little bit of...
