Real Burger — Restaurant in Kaipātiki

We live locally in Birkenhead and went to Real Burger Wednesday night. We ordered 2 of the Bacon burgers which we have had before and found to be delicious. However, something has obviously happened since we last visited as their quality definitely has gone downhill. First of all we were quite disgusted by how dirty the tables were. They were so sticky and clearly had not been cleaned which made it very uncomfortable to sit and wait for our food. Despite this we were very excited to eat our yummy burgers when got home but soon were very confused and disappointed to find they were absolutely disgusting. The burgers tasted of nothing but tomato relish, which was so overpowering that it made the burgers inedible. These bacon burgers are meant to have bourbon sauce which was not even evident to be in the burger at all. Usually I would go back to complain, however we were unable to return that night as they were closing soon and we would not make it back in time. I called instead and spoke to the guy who served us who told me to text my email address to the phone number I called them on and he would email me some vouchers that night when they closed. We did not receive them. We hoped to receive these vouchers so we could return Thursday night but we still did not receive them. I tried to contact them again yesterday but have been completely ignored. I can see they have read my messages but still have had no communication from them or any trace of these promised vouchers. I should not have to chase them up to make their mistake right. I am absolutely disgusted by their lack of management and lack of concern for the customers and food they are providing. As far as I’m concerned they have lost a customer and we will not be returning. If they continue this way with their customers their business will not be around for much longer. I had a high expectation coming to this place since my friend highly recommended it to me a few times. But I was rather disappointed.

Went for lunch and the lunch deal wasn’t visibly shown on the menu so I kinda wasted my money paying for a burger a homemade drink and fries. With the lunch menu you get a better deal. There was only one person working at peak hour doing everything by himself, cooking and serving. He seemed too occupied with grilling so I ordered at the kiosk instead. I was only told about the lunch deal when he was serving the food and offered me a drink for free. I appreciated it but would have been better if I was told earlier. He was very friendly and nice I’d go back because of him.

The drinking glasses in the fridge needs a good wash. I saw dirty glasses around the rims, appeared like lip marks with grease so I had to pick a clean one but still was a bit grossed out so I had to wipe it before using it. And the table near the fridge should be wiped thoroughly. It was very sticky to touch. I just had an impression that hygiene was not good.

Lastly, the homemade peach ice tea I ordered was lukewarm and tasted weird like it was off. I didn’t want to waste it but it took me three sips till I decided not to drink the rest. It’d be nicer to filter out the black residue that was on the bottom of the cup and make it cooler with more ice or store it in the fridge. Today was particularly warm (25 degrees) so during mid summer it should be served much cooler. Hope the one I drank wasn’t off. But if it was freshly made, perhaps you should consider changing the ingredients or the recipe.

The burger I ordered was called “O.G” it was good. But I think it’d taste better with a kick of something to cut the grease. The fries were crispy and not too salty but wasn’t hot.

Overall it was alright.

UPDATE: YUPPP! Definitely will keep coming back after getting that smokey bacon bbq burger. These buns are what makes it 100%. The nacho cheese fries are great too.

ORIGINAL: That was a pretty good 'smashed' burger; enough for me that I'd come back for another one day when I'm around the mall.
