I never write reviews but I will this time, in fact it's my 2nd time and my first was a 5 Star. Here are the reasons. Lady at counter didn't understand English (not being racist) but when you order something and the waitress doesn't understand and you have to point it out on the menu is very frustrating. You don't get a number and they just write down the area you sit in. How are you suppose to organise where you're going to sit when you are ordering? Like a normal cafe you get a number and you choose where to sit. My partner ordered a toastie which was cooked and left on the counter, Not delivered to her but just sat there as we watched flies land on it and it went cold...to my surprise 😒 Why wasn't it taken to her? I ordered a mussel and fish soup. To which the waitress went around asking everyone if they had ordered "vegetable soup" maybe if you actually put decent portions of fish and mussel the waitress would know which soup it was and if you had numbers they wouldn't be bothering everyone. Also they confused it for vegetable soup? It's not even on the menu?

You need to train your staff properly and have better organising skills. It was the only place that wasn't too busy, should've taken note of that in the first place. Staff also ignored many customers who were waiting to order, never again will I be ordering from here and I'm going to deter everyone away from this place If they decide to go into...

One review sad to be making…food was mostly ok but there seemed to be a lack of experience and training front of house. One couple got their order reasonably quickly but the second couples delivery went to another table and was handled by children there. When this was pointed out to the waitstaff she put our order back in BUT at the back of the queue. When this was protested it was moved up but when delivered was around 45 minutes after initial order, minus the bacon added to the French toast. Bacon on toast (2) arrived with soft bread, a seemly 10 second toast, and 4 small pieces of bacon - 2 certainly didn’t cover 1 pc of bread. On the plus side the French toast was tasty, and bacon ok - perhaps another positive was my waistline wasn’t stretched! Perhaps consideration of visible table numbers might help staff with delivery… a request to see the manager (busy in kitchen) was made but after 10 minutes of waiting I requested a $4 refund for the missing bacon, and left. Disappointed at attitudes and...

Come because there’s not much else...

Decided to have a quick bite to eat before returning home on the Interislander. For a grand total of $40, you can get the Entree Mussels and the Chunky Vegetable Soup with 2 drinks.

Mussels weren’t seasoned, weren’t paired with any sauce or broth, and only accompanied with 2 slices of bread; bland and unappetising.

I had the Chunky Vegetable Soup which was quite fragrant but came in a bowl so shallow, the actual tablespoon (not soup spoon) wasn’t even submerged halfway; could’ve poured the bowl of soup into my glass of mineral water. Found whole peppercorns throughout the soup and could’ve filled up the pepper grinder found on the table for them with the amount I was given.

We only ate there because:

  1. We didn’t want to eat at a pub
  2. We already ate at the place around the corner when we first arrived at Picton
  3. The other place we wanted to eat was closed for a private function
  4. It was the only other restaurant open within walking...

Our waiter was kind but everything else about this place is seriously lacking and indicative of the lack of competition that would otherwise see this overpriced restaurant fail. The $16.50 fish and mussel soup was, at most, 2 cups of vegetables with 1 mussel chopped into 5 pieces and a few crumbles of fish. The mussels in the soup, along with the mussels my partner ordered, still had the beards intact. Also, a "half" portion of mussels cost $16 and only contains 6 mussels. Finally, we waited over 45 minutes to receive our food and not once received an update or apology for the delay, despite there only being a handful of other patrons in the restaurant. I would highly recommend avoiding this place and taking your business elsewhere.

Went in for coffee and tea for takeaway, said they didn't have a strainer for the tea for takeaway so ended up just getting a coffee for my dad. Went back again the next day to try their lunch, they told my dad they were too busy to make him a steak sandwich (there were more tables open than occupied) and that it wasn't lunch time yet (10 Min prior to lunch) and then brought me tea with a strainer that they didn't have yesterday...? So a bit disappointing, just felt like they didn't want to instead of them not being able to. Food was otherwise lovely and it's a nice spot to look out onto the waterfront.

Amazing way to finish our Tapuae-o-uenuku Sea to Summit to Sea adventure. Our front of house (owner?) was fantastic in accommodating us with all our gear and really interested in what we'd been up to. The Game Burgers and were 👌 and the range of local craft beers was brilliant after 3 days in the hills. Last of the sun on the Picton waterfront, couldn't ask for better. Merci beaucoup! I hope you make it to the mountain for that ski...
