This is the first time something similar happened to my husband and me in our lives (we are both 79!) We entered the Eatery and Bar (SISU) in Picton this afternoon. We wanted to have a bite and a drink outside the place but not in the sun. There was only one table vacant, but the waitress explained to us that it is reserved for the locals if they happen to visit the restaurant. So we obeyed and took the seat inside. While studying the menu lying on the table a waiter came and started to explain the menu. We told him that we have already decided on the dishes which we would like to order. He neglected our desire to take the order and kept on talking. We tried to stop him, but he didn't take any notice. When he actually did not succeed in persuading us that his talk is being useful, he said he would not attend us and asked us to leave the restaurant. My husband wanted to order a glass of beer, but he said we were not welcome there. It's been the first time in New Zealand that we were treated in such a rude way. Shame on you SISU Eatery. By the way, we have been travelling in New Zealand with a group of foreigners for 23 days and have always been treated...

re thought our experience , hence an 'edit' 60 days following visit-

solid 3 - 2 - 1 score-

food was a three - atmosphere a two - service / note zero response from mgmt equals solid ONE in a 1-5 format like this.

BIG price tiny portions- tasty thoughtful delicacies albeit in miniature- beverage service less than adequate for price point- staff attitude on the 'edge' of snobbish , again at the pricing level which is 'International' in provincial nz. basic bench seating hardly 5 star for lofty costings - all things considered a disappointment factoring in all components of this hospo experience. NOT a destination dining choice in it's present format- The 'TRUST me' menu was unacceptable as was overall ambience. VALUE was poor would not return or recommend on this forum, am pleased to share our veritable experiences with readers.

waay over priced considering we were hungry after 'TRUST me menu failed to deliver enough content -twas really tiny portions!

Thank you for looking at...

We just arrived in Picton and saw many empty tables at Sisu but when our group of 12 professional adults asked if we could sit down we were rudely told ‘not a chance’ We thought it was a joke but definitely not, we were told they do not take groups of over 6 even when we said we would sit at separate tables. Had someone explained politely that they couldn’t cater to larger groups due to kitchen space or staffing that would have been fine but to rudely tell us Not a chance, was quite shocking. Do not recommend!!

Edited to respond to Sisu reply:

We were not aware of your policy regarding group sizes, as we did not check your website beforehand. When we walked past, a significant portion of your restaurant appeared unoccupied so we asked a simple question. Had this policy been communicated to us in a polite and professional manner, this review would not have been necessary. Regardless, we chose to dine elsewhere and had a wonderful experience with warm and...

My husband, our 14 year old, and I, had lunch here in February 2025. Wow! Order 2 of the bread (light as air) and get a selection of the small plates. We chose the spinach pancakes, venison, lamb, and stuffed mushrooms. Our teen added French Fries, but ended up eating most of the bread before we could claim ours! The food was world class, with balanced and distinctive flavours. Each dish curated to highlight the key ingredient. The food was presented with restrained elegance and served by friendly and knowledgeable staff who introduced each dish, and described the ingredients and accompanying garnishes with genuine enthusiasm. The drinks list boasted an incredible range of local Marlborough wines and tempting beers. My husband enjoyed a quirky Mexican beer. We sat at an indoor table, but were connected to the cheerful activity of the pavement and the view of the port through the large open doors. This family will be returning to Sisu, when we next visit Picton.

Amazing dining experience, one of those restaurants you would give 6 stars if you could. It's run by a Finnish/german couple serving Finnish classics in fine dining style. By sheer coincidence i actually went here with a Finnish couple and they explained to me that most of these dishes can be traced back to finland. Would highly recommend trying the Mushrooms, Crudo and Venison. These to me are absolute musts as the flavour combinations are brilliant. Nevertheless, the other 2 dishes we had were also delicious. The staff was both really professional and cheerful. The service was quick and the atmosphere was nice. It's fine dining at a very reasonable price, as it is not much more expensive than the more standard restaurants around it. Reserve in advance Because it's very popular, it's easily the best restaurant in town!

OMG, Sisu Restaurant in Picton absolutely blew us away! 🤩 From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with the warmest, most welcoming service, the staff were just next-level amazing, so friendly and attentive! 💛 And the food and wine? To. Die. For. 😍 Every dish was bursting with flavor, plated beautifully, and you could just taste the love and care put into it. The wine selection was chef’s kiss 🍷👌 paired perfectly with our meal! The whole vibe was just stunning, beautiful atmosphere, relaxed but still so special. ✨ Whether you’re after a long, lazy lunch or a special dinner, this place is an absolute must. 10/10, can’t wait to go back! 😍🙌
