Set in the heart of Picton and literally 3 minutes drive from the Bluebridge Ferry terminal, the High Street Living Motel is ideal for staying overnight in Picton before catching the morning ferry to Wellington. It means you can have a leisurely drive up to Picton without the pressure of having to meet a deadline for checking in for your ferry. The Motel may be small but the staff have a big heart, friendly and welcoming. Each of the three times we have stayed now, we have been offered an upgrade if we wanted it. This time we decided to stick with the two single bedded room as booked, which was more than adequate for our needs. Our room (Room 9) had two very comfortable single beds in, as well as TV (with Netflix if you had your own account), fridge, microwave, kettle, cutlery & crockery. The heater provided kept the room nice and warm all night. The en-suite bathroom had a good strong shower with no problems with hot water. Large pump action bottles of soap, shampoo & conditioner means no plastic waste, which is good. Room 9 is closest to the street but no street noise was heard while we were there. We did hear noises through the wall from the hairdressers on the other side of it, but they close at 5.00pm so wasn't a problem. There is a 4-Square supermarket next door for any grocery needs and plenty of restaurants, bars and takeaway options within easy walking distance. Only word of caution is to remember to keep the bathroom door shut (and switch on the extractor fan) when showering, as the in-room smoke detector is just...

The motel is positioned in the middle of the main street so it is walking distance to cafes, restaurant, supermarket (next door) and the ferrys. The motel is dated and the rooms on the small side. We had a two bedroom one but if you had four people staying it would have been so cramped. We had no hanging space at all in the main bedroom so had to use the second bedroom to unpack our cases and hang clothes. Also no air conditioning only pedestal fans which are not great to use in an already small bedroom. The kitchenette seemed to have all the basic requirements. The bathroom was interesting with a light positioned straight over the shower – not sure how that was allowed! Also had some very odd positioning of power points. There is parking onsite but it is very tight and can be noisy when people are either coming in late or...
Read moreThe High Street Living Motel is located halfway down Picton's high street in a brilliant location close to all the shops and waterfront. The car parking is free - but a bit tight! We received a warm welcome from the owner and found our room (Number 3) right away with a small outside table and chairs. The room however was rather small. We struggled to find space for our two suitcases and although the room had a good bathroom and shower the bedroom itself was small. There was a fridge, a microwave, a flat screen TV, no hangind space and a cupboard for crockery and cutlery. But although there were two chairs for sitting and a small coffee table there was nowhere to sit at a laptop and edit pictures, as I like to do. We paid £65 for one night - so it wasn't too expensive but I would not have wanted to stay more than one night here because it was a...
