Mags Fresh Fish — Restaurant in North Island

The first stop on our trip was to get fresh fish and chips cause where we come from you just dont get fresh fish let alone great customer service so as you can imagine we were excited to get both. On our trip from Auckland to Whakatane we deliberately looked for a takeaway that looked clean, bright, fresh and neat peeps. When we got to Mt Maunganui...we found our place....the shop was clean, bright, fresh assortment of fish in the cabinet that we could choose from, great range of food off the menu but more importantly, a warm, welcoming smile from behind the counter. Mags' genuine honest approach made our visit that much more inviting....the Gurnard fish was wrapped in light seasoned batter, similar to that of Tempura... and when I bit into the soft fleshy fish it just melted in my mouth...it was absolutely divine...the chips, aioli and tartare sauce were very tasty but paled in comparison to the precision cooked Gurnard... the Eggburger was filled to the max with salad, including beetroot, and a scrumptious ever so tasty pattie and sauces to cry for...if you want real freshly cooked tasty fish n chips with traditional Maori flare, go to Mags...you will not be disappointed...and we definately will be back on our...

Under new ownership and the quality has skyrocketed!

Well done to Kelly and chef on improving the standard and working towards becoming the benchmark for your local fish and chip shop. Mags would be proud of the quality.

The fish is super fresh with tasty batter, chips cooked to perfection with a good amount of salt and crisp, and the bacon & egg burger was super delicious and filling.

Would highly recommend to all visitors to pop on...

Went here Saturday 2nd September 2017. Bought a punnet Jumbo Oysters for $25 for Fathers Day Breakfast. Not only was there no date sticker but the punnet had been opened as the break of tag was gone. There was only 2 oysters that could come anywhere near to being described as jumbo. The rest looked like they have been shucked by a child. All mangled and just rubbish looking. I will be contacting the company on the punnet. Not happy...
