They only opened 3 months ago and I have already heard raving reviews, so of course I had to give them a go! Luckily we went just before the storm came, it's a cute little unassuming spot perfect for the lunch crowd who works top of Lambton Quay. The price is very friendly, especially for dinner (and impressive portion size)! We got all the famous dishes like the rice noodle soup with fishballs (kuey teow th'ng), Laksa, char kuey teow, and the Hainan chicken rice. The portion size was very impressive and there were so many pieces inside! To begin with, we were recommended the spring rolls, which had prawns inside, fried crispy and hot, not overly greasy and had a beautiful flavour. The rice noodle soup was slippery and the soup was not too salty, super juicy and soft chicken pieces on top, apparently these were especially marinated and not just standard boiled chicken chucked on the top! The laksa was very rich and creamy, also with lots of toppings (and with the same tender chicken) super satisfying on the cold night. The char kuey teow had a good amount of work hei, hits the spot and does not disappoint, while for me, the Hainan chicken rice was the best I have had in Wellington! The chicken was tender and juicy, and the rice had a beautiful flavour, the soup on the side was a bonus, with super authentic chilli sauce and the ginger scallion paste, all handmade! To finish, we couldn't resist the fried banana with ice cream, and the bananas were equally not super greasy with the right crunch and authentic flavours, thumbs up from us and a seal of approval from our fellow southeast-Asian foodie! Bonus, nice drinks too!

Ordered the claypot chicken rice and char koay teow #CKT. Both dishes came out piping hot. Hubby enjoyed the fresh and tender CKT cooked medium spicy and served on a piece of banana leaf. It came with two large prawns, chicken, chinese sausages and crispy pork lard. My claypot chicken rice was very well flavoured and served with tender moist boneless chicken thighs. The rice was well seasoned with soy sauce, but was not too salty at all. It was a really enjoyable meal, especially when enhanced with the crispy rice at the bottom of the claypot and the fresh chillies which lifted it a notch higher. I gave hubby a few spoons of my chicken and rice, and after he finished his CKT he started helping himself to my claypot chicken rice! It was so enjoyable to eat! Easily the best Malaysian food in Wellington! The restaurant has an extensive menu and many uniquely malaysian drinks too, like durian coffee, hor kar sai, teh tarik and milo dinosaur. The owner Kelly and staff are super friendly and can accommodate your dietary needs. They can make the dishes #porkfree or #vegetarian on request. Yummy food. Highly recommended place to eat.

I’m a born and bred South East Asian, and I’m proud to say that this little place serves up a pretty decent dish which is how they do it back home. I’ll be back to try out more dishes and will update more pics and review them accordingly. Had lunch today and tried their cha kway teow, mee goreng and chicken wings. The char kway teow has the perfect wok hei which is hard to find these days. The mee goreng has the slightly wet, sweet and tangy flavour, like how it’s served back home at the Malay stalls. Just a slight tip - mild still has that spicy kick so best to say no chilli if you’re not into that level. The chicken wing was tasty, moist and the batter thin enough to not overpower the dish. Portion size is great and price is reasonable. It does fill up very quickly during lunch time and they also open for dinner.

We recently dined at One Bowl and Plate and every dish was amazing. We had the char kway teow, curry laksa, crispy spring rolls, roasted duck rice and we can confidently say it was an unforgettable culinary experience, truly a Malaysian authenticity. The menu offered a fantastic selection on traditional Malaysian dishes, and we were thrilled to see some of our favorites alongside items! The Nasi Lemak was the best we've ever had! The rice was perfectly fragrant and fluffy, while the curry sambal had just the right amount of spice to elevate the dish. The crispy anchovies and fried egg were the perfect complements, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

For drinks, we couldn't resist trying the Malaysian coffee, mint lychee soda and teh tarik which were the ideal refreshing treat to end the meal and absolutely delicious!

Kelly at One bowl and plate was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure our dining experience was seamless. She was happy to recommend dishes and shared interesting insights about the ingredients used, which made the meal even more special. Overall, we highly recommend One bowl and Plate to anyone looking to enjoy authentic Malaysian cuisine. We can't wait to return and share this gem with...
