I’m not really sure why we keep giving munch more chances to disappoint us as 8/10 times we’ve been there we’ve had issues. What has brought us back is the keto-friendly menu and that the management typically do try and make things right, but that can only go so far … and after today I feel it’s safe to say we’re done.
Munch is very expensive for what it is comparative to other (and better cafes) in town. For example. $26 for a keto bene which is 2 eggs, 2 rashers of bacon and 1 chuffle with garnish … still, I’m happy to pay for good food but this was not good … the eggs were over cooked and the chuffle dense and nasty … we come here especially for the chuffles but each time we come they are getting worse. Both orders had eggs that were almost totally solid yolks and while I thought about sending them back to be redone the coffee issue made me less than confident.
The coffee issue I hear you ask dear reader? Well yeah. I order a soy flat white … when it arrived and I put a spoon through it, it was lumpy!! This does sometimes happen with inexperienced baristas who overheat the milk and cause the soy to separate, however it is an easy fix … I had them remake it and the “barista” came over saying would I like something different as with soy that’s just what happens. Tried to blame their brand of soy milk and attempted to convince me to order something else. I declined when I realized that her attitude was “well if it goes lumpy it’s just what happens with soy milk” … tell that to the baristas all over the country (and the world) who have made me perfect soy flat whites, soy lattes, etc., for the last 20 years.
Overall I’m all for second chances … and even thirds, Munch I’ve given about 10 but there is no consistency, and for the price they should do better. When we have such better places in town I would just skip Munch.
**EDIT: In response to the comment by the owner below. The barista asked me if I would like a coffee made with a different milk, which I declined. Further though, while she did say she could remake the soy flat white, she also told me in the same breath that the soy flat white would like come out the same way ... ie., lumpy, which I did, as per the review refuse. Had I had confidence that anything can or would have changed, I would have considered discussing with the owner, as yes, I did see you there, however, we decided that after the many instances we've had where we have spoken to someone and yet we are still having the same issues, there was little point. While the owner may not like critical reviews, they serve a tool to reflect their experience to others in the hope that others don't have the same experience. Have the several times we've had that kind of experience, we did not review, because there have been times we've had great experience, however as my review reflects ... it's about consistency. And if your barista says anything other than that she told me that the only option to not have the "lumpy soy" [which is actually split, which any barista should know], was to either have a different milk OR to have it cold, then she is not honestly reflecting the...
Read moreAs someone who cannot eat Gluten, I was extremely excited to find Munch. I went once last year and it was average but I thought I'd try it again last month. I wish I had stayed curious. I chose 3 sweets - The Strawberry Cake, The Perkynana slice and The Brownie and I can confidently say, they are in my top 5 of disgusting Gluten Free Food. The only reason I gave a 2 and not a 1 is because I did eat the curly fries.
The Strawberry cake was so dense and dry, there was hardly any moisture. The icing was grainy, all I could taste and feel was granulated sugar. In my opinion, it's inedible.
The Perkynana slice was yummy on top (tge lollies and choc) but the base was again, incredibly dry! I've never had such dry cake before. We were trying to force them down because they were not cheap.
The brownie was also dry but was the best of the 3. My child said it was okay but I've had better gluten free brownies at other restaurants.
The coffee tasted burnt and I did not drink mine but last time I went here, I did have a good coffee.
Now for something positive, it is very spacious inside and is very clean and tidy. They also have a great range of kids toys to help you entertain your children which i did like.
The place was packed so we couldn't get anyone's attention and the counter line was 20 people deep so people obviously enjoy it. I personally, do not and will not...
Read moreWe were visiting Palmerston North for one night for Wiggles-related reasons and Munch grabbed my attention for brekkie that morning because it was close to the venue and had a very good allergen-friendly menu.
The staff were all very friendly and kind, and the venue itself is very lovely decor-wise. We had our baby and our nearly 4yo with us and it was a very kid-friendly place with a fun kids menu.
I had a flat white and the eggs bene with pork belly and it's absolutely ruined me for bene any other way. My husband had a vege grill and enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 4yo had the banana, bliss ball, yoghurt, juice kids brekkie and loved it! The food and coffee came out quickly.
There were great gender neutral toilet facilities which were spotless and well appointed. There is seating available downstairs and upstairs, and while I didn't go upstairs the seating downstairs was tables and chairs or booths, and was comfortable and easy to navigate through the venue.
Very disappointed that I won't be going back to Palmerston North in the near future, but as soon as we visit again I will be eating a...
