The Chartroom — Restaurant in South Island

Everything was fine quality wise, service was good. However the portions for the price and what the restaurant is, is a bit silly.

Firstly, $6 for not even 330ml of coke, possibly closer to 250ml is the most expensive I've seen between Wellington and ChCh. Oh, and no cocktail menu?

Secondly, $27 for a plate of Carbonara that is vegetarian is quite steep considering the portion size. Similar with the entree fried chicken, $17 for maybe 10 fork/bite sized pieces is probably also a bit on the pricier side, but much more reasonable compared to the rest.

I feel like this place is new, especially as it doesn't show up on Google maps normally without searching for it, however it needs to find it's identity.

Lots of small things add up to prevent this being fine dining, the quality of the chairs, the small table size, etc. All of these are just limitations of the space that I understand, however they're trying to be something they're not, and it makes the overall experience worse.

I could see this place being a great casual dining experience, I would keep your eyes on this one and see what people say in a year's time, I can only see them...

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. Every staff member was superb from the guy at front desk ( sorry I haven't his name!) Mel who greeted me in the restaurant each morning, Justine the chef - omg her food is to die for, Shona the housekeeper who quietly and respectfully went about her day ( I love my late morning lie in! ) and not forgetting Joshua the Manager who remembered my name - that was impressive!. Btw, I loved your hat! Every staff member went above and beyond what I have become accustomed too here in NZ. I cannot recommend this hotel enough, I have stayed before and will again because the service, atmosphere, food and cost will not be better elsewhere. The dirty door and not quite spotless glasses completely let down the restaurant. Food was excellent and the chef was attentive and seriously cared (quite unusual) the waitress was efficient and polite and very pleasant. Wine and desert again faultless.
