Mat Cafe is an absolute gem! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying some quiet time alone. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure every visit is a delightful experience. As for the food, it's simply outstanding. The menu offers a wonderful variety of dishes, each bursting with flavor and made with the freshest ingredients. Whether you're craving a hearty breakfast or a satisfying lunch, Mat Cafe has something for everyone. I can't recommend this place enough – it's become my go-to spot whenever I'm in town!

First time visitors at Whitianga and when we passed by on Saturday morning, so many people there and we went back to try this place. We are not disappointed. The staff is very friendly and the food is amazing. We ordered egg benedict and seafood chowder and coffee and chai was awesome too. Very nice location near the information center. The Malaysian lunch special, Beef and the Chicken Rendang sounds good and would love to try when we come back. Can't wait

My husband and I enjoyed our coffee at Mat’s with my husband’s primary schoolmate and his wife on 6/8/2024. The owner Mat is very hospitable and friendly who has a lovely chat with me. The lovely barista really knows how to make a cup of coffee with beautiful latte art. We highly recommend you to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake at Mat’s if you live in Whitianga or happen to visit Whitianga.

This was a new cafe in town since my last visit to Whitianga so it was high on my list of places to check out. It did not disappoint. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive; even though Mat and his waitperson were both busy, they acknowledged our presence and attended to us as soon as they could - a few minutes at worst.

I ordered the Full Monty breakfast whilst my sister order a Garlic, Mushrooms and Caramelised Crepe. They soon arrived and were very satisfying. Notably the breakfast had chorizo rather than kranskys, a very welcome change from other cafes we had visited recently. Too often there is a sameness about breakfasts in cafes here so the chorizo was a good way to add that little difference to things.

With the open doors and large windows, it is a nice and bright atmosphere, a perfect place to sit and watch the world go by whilst...

They use Laroma Espresso beans here which doesn’t give them a lot of flavour to work with. That said, I thought the coffee acceptable considering. The menu has all of the usual traditional cafe fare. I had eggs on a rosti, which I could not fault, but there was no “flair” it. The prices are economical , and the owner knows all his regulars and chats with them - which probably explains the older crowd who flock here. It’s the Whitianga equivalent of Gloria Jeans - well priced, you inow what you are getting, but it is not the epicurean end to...
