When I heard there were coffees inside pie shells I had to give it a go.
PieFees are mini pie shells lined with caramel and chocolate, then filled with the drink of your choice! I opted for a flat white and my partner got a mocha. That was a hot chocolate heavy but he learned his lesson and got a regular flat white in it next time.
I’m able to get decaf and non dairy milk too.
The coffees are excellent even if you don’t get a PieFee and the staff are so nice. We came in once after they had put the chairs up and we’re going to get our coffees to go, but they offered right away we could sit in there to have our drinks if we wanted and chucked a few chairs back down. We didn’t even ask, they just offered.
The cabinet food selection is good too and I usually get the spinach feta quiche. Sweet and savory both available.
Fresh bread is available and very soft, not overly hard crust like a lot of places.
Perfect spot to sit in the morning on a weekend or lazy afternoon during the week for a break.
Make sure to sip a PieFee over your plate or with your plate. Don’t be like my partner and eat the shell while the coffee is...
Read morePiefee is located on K Rd, towards the Newton/Ponsonby end of the bridge over the motorway. They have a fairly large range of pies available as well as other bakery treats. They also have a coffee or hot chocolate in a pie shell. We grabbed a couple of pies and a drink. There are tables inside and outside of the shop but it can get full quite fast. We tried the spicy shrimp pie as well as the chicken, spinach and feta pie. I quite liked the spicy shrimp since it had a nice warmth and flavour. The pies were nice and had a nice amount of filling. The pastry was flakey but there were areas where it was a little stodgy. The drink in a pie was brought out when it was ready. It was something novel and it wasn't bad. I did drink the liquid before biting into the shell to prevent spillage. The pastry is sweet short crust and quite nice. It has a layer of chocolate and the bottom also had caramel. It was a nice place to grab something quick on the go or something interesting to drink if you...
Read moreWow! Our first NZ pie did not disappoint - in fact, it most definitely enhanced!! Admittedly, our first 24 hrs we were expecting something more "routine," I suppose? Like a British pie? Nope! Flavors galore, fun combinations we didn't expect, and the most warm greeting from superbly friendly staff!
Our top picks were chicken Spinach feta and of course steak and cheese. The cappuccino was lovely as well. We had 2 other flavors as well and still needed to go back to order seconds.
The location was charming and gritty. The hotel where we're staying warned us of "colorful characters" in the area, because we have our kids with us. Frankly, they were wrong. It was the perfect type of gritty: artistic, graffiti loving LGBTQ welcoming hood, and working locals happy to meet a foreigner and advise on what pies to buy. The neighborhood was safe and mostly sane, unlike the best parts of any American big cities anymore.
Lovely establishment, incredible food, cannot wait to return!!!...
