We were in Bergen for two nights as part of our almost two weeks long road trip in Norway. We saw this restaurant while walking in the old city looking for a restaurant. The name of the restaurant is second biggest city in Myanmar (Burma) and famous for its food. The menu also listed some Burmese food so we wanted to eat there but it was full. We asked the only waitress we saw there but she was not so friendly. We also met the cook, he told us he is Karen (Kayin), one of the ethnic groups from Burma. Kayin lives very far from Mandalay. However since we don’t have Burmese food in Munich, we reserved for next evening. We went there next day, it is a small but clean decent restaurant but none of the Burmese food is available. So we ordered Gyoza and sushi (Japanese), Mandalay fried noodle hoping Burmese taste, and masala beef curry. Food were fine but none of them Mandalay style or Burmese at all. Not Thai as well. We ordered beef but we got chicken but we accepted it as we were hungry after fjord tours. Also because they are not so friendly. To be fair, they were busy. Sushi was very good but we can have similar in Germany or in any other countries. Curry was very spicy but tempura onion was nice. Mdy Noodle was good but a bit sweet. They are not that cheap as well but I think that is Bergen. We got better food with lower price, nicer ambience in Lom, Olsen,...
Read morePretty good asian food for Norway. Ordered the Burmese Fish Soup and Shrimp Pad Thai.
Burmese fish soup was super tasty - acidic and zesty. Was surprised to see it was packed generously with bits of meat, fish and noodles and the bottom. It was quite filling for an entree (not a bad thing).
Shrimp Pad Thai was ok. First time having a burmese and thai fusion pad thai but it was more tomato based and quite oily. I felt like it lacked a depth like fish sauce which is a core ingredient in authentic pad thais to tie in the umami flavour.
Nevertheless, great service and very welcoming. Portions were super generous (so if you’re not a big eater, order down lol unlike me). Also appreciated the cooks making the fish soup for me although it was not available on...
Read moreIt is not easy to find Burmese restaurants outside of Myanmar. I definitely miss the mohinga, their national rice noodle dish, and there was no mohinga in Mandalay Sushi (or did I overlook that?), so I had the tom yum and chicken curry instead.
The seafood soup of tom yum was creamy and aromatic, mildly spicy with a tasty coconut flavour. The curry was fine, pleasantly thick and flavourful sauce which tasted close to what I had tried in Myanmar, though the ingredients were not in the best form - chicken was dried and bland in taste. It was great that the curry dish was complimented by Japanese rice. This is my favourite type of rice which is fluffier and slightly stickier...
