I recently visited Girotondo, and while the restaurant had its strengths, there were some aspects that fell short of our expectations. The Italian-style pizza, for instance, was a little underwhelming, as we've had better pizza elsewhere in Oslo.
COPPA E BURRATA AL TARTUFO COPPA E BURRATA AL TARTUFO featured fresh burrata surrounded by coppa meat and topped with a black truffle pesto. The burrata itself was excellent, with a soft and creamy interior that paired well with the strong truffle flavor. The dish was served with some delicious focaccia bread and aioli dip.
PIZZA Moving on to the pizza, we found that the dough was good, with a nice chew and crispiness. However, we were disappointed by the lack of toppings - the sauce and cheese were both sparse, and we often found ourselves biting into a pizza with little to no toppings. The tomato sauce had a sour taste that wasn't particularly pleasant, and we felt that the pizzas had a lot of bare spots without cheese coverage.
CALABRESE The CALABRESE had a nice chewy crust that was crispy, but it lacked in toppings as well, especially cheese. There were some bites with no toppings at all or very little nduja salami.
PRINCIPESSA The PRINCIPESSA was a bit better in terms of toppings, as the parma ham acually covered the whole pizza, but it still lacked some cheese on some spots leaving just parma ham and sauce...
Read moreFirst off the pizzas. Huge portion sizes that arrived surprisingly fast after we ordered. Topping average and fine, but the highlight was the dough. Chewy and airy. I also liked the creative pizza menu.
265 nok for a pizza places Girotondo on the higher end of the price scale. The most I’ve paid for a pizza in Oslo following Mamma Pizza. In return I was therefore pleased to see big pizzas.
Came here with three friends, and it was a bit back and forwards with the table. We were told to eat downstairs, but we were then moved upstairs. Then had to wait a bit for the table we had ordered. But fine, it happens. Sadly this service continued during the evening - and we were mostly ignored by busy waiters the whole meal. Had to try to stop them walking past us several times as to order our food, and to pay. Never got top up on drinks. So I have to deduct points for the service - as it was neither a weekday nor a particularly busy evening.
Overall decent pizzas that lacked the accompanying service. As I read good reviews in terms of service, I am guessing we got unlucky - and I would say it’s a okei place to try out if on the hunt for pizzas in the...
Read moreThere are two things to know when considering Girotondo. First, and maybe most important, MAKE RESERVATIONS. This place is really popular and it’s difficult to get seated without on especially on the weekend. Second, the tables are large communal tables so you’re going to be sitting next to people not in your group unless you have enough people in your party to take on a full table (I’m guessing 14ish). If you’re looking for something more intimate for a smaller group you’ll want to consider that.
Food-wise, they make some damn good Neapolitan pizza with wide ranging toppings. They’re meant to be portioned for an individual, but they’re pretty big so even the most hungry of people will leave satisfied.
The staff is amazing and are really passionate about making your experience the best. We understand why this place is so popular.
One last tip. Girotondo is split into two levels. The restaurant is on the second floor while the bar is...
