My husband and I visited Oslo in mid-May and were fortunate to enjoy warm, beautiful spring weather with temperatures between 22-25 degrees. On our first evening, we sought out a local restaurant to immerse ourselves in the authentic atmosphere of the city. We were lucky enough to find Kaffistova, where we were warmly welcomed. To our delight, there were rehearsals for a local folklore music and dance group happening that evening. The atmosphere was truly magical, filled with traditional Norwegian sounds and lively performances. I opted for a 3-course dinner with wine pairing, while my husband ordered the salmon with beer. The food was delicious, made with high-quality and fresh ingredients. Each wine pairing was a perfect match for every course. Special mention must go to the attentive service provided by a lady with an amazing smile and warm hospitality. She truly enhanced our dining experience with her friendly demeanor and exceptional service. Overall, our visit to Kaffistova was a wonderful experience. If you're looking for authentic Norwegian cuisine paired with excellent service and a charming atmosphere, Kaffistova is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Moose patties tasted fine. Fish soup flavor was fine, but not much actual fish or shrimp found in the soup, more of a chowder taste wise. Menu said it came with buttered bread, but just two small slices of toast, not even worth mentioning on menu. Service was below average. We had three servers as we were in between lunch and dinner I imagine. All friendly. First took order for drinks, but they never came. Second took food and drink order again, but we never saw them again, no water refills, etc. Third put reservation notice on table and told us it wasn’t reserved for another three hours, good to know. It was clear we were already finishing up and water glasses empty. We asked for the check. After payment we let them know there was hair, at least three, found in the fish soup. He did not seem concerned or surprised. For a 100+ year food institution the service felt off, more like an international restaurant like outback level service. No one seemed invested or cared about quality of service or food. Again waiters were friendly so, so I imagine more management and training issue.

I was looking for a place that served Norwegian food, specifically I was looking for moose or reindeer meat because I really wanted to try it. Quite a fancy place, I felt a bit ashemed of being in leggins and with my backpack ready to go back to the airport, lol. I definitely found what I was looking for and it was really good! I really enjoyed my moose burger sandwich and I wish I could have stayed for dinner but alas, I couldn't. This restaurant has a 20% off if you have the Oslo pass (which I did have but I forgot to use it, damn it) and it's a bit more pricey for dinner. I think is worth it but considering how everything is more expensive in Norway (compare to London at least) maybe have a look around you first.

We were a group of 8 that dined here last Saturday. We decided on Kaffistova based on the personal recommendation of a famous Norwegian chef to a Norwegian friend of ours. Apparently, the restaurant had a new chef focusing on traditional Norwegian food which we were informed was very good. As 6 of our party were visitors from abroad, we wanted to treat them to an authentic meal. Unfortunately, our experience at Kaffistova was a complete disaster. When we arrived, we were informed that the kitchen only had two dishes on the menu, the one being elg meatballs and the other beef meatballs, and no starters whatsoever. Hearing this, we tried to book a table elsewhere but since it was already 8 p.m. all other restaurants we knew of that were good were already fully booked. Two waitresses frantically tried to do their best, but it didn't help that we initially incorrectly received the lunch menu instead of dinner menu. When the dinner menu arrived, it still took at least 20 minutes before the waitress informed us that they only had 2 items on the menu, the table was not set correctly even though we booked five days ago, and we repeatedly had to ask for water refill. Having no other choice, we stayed at Kaffistova, ate our meatballs, which at best were mediocre, with the first four portions being served at least 15 minutes before the second four portions. We also ordered desserts which were not fresh. When the bill arrived, we were given a 10% discount due to the circumstances, but of course this was no compensation for the dinner we had looked forward to. I'd also like to point out that the restaurant had plenty of opportunity to phone us in advance and inform us of about the...

The overall summary of this place is - grandeur in looks but does not help win the taste buds game.

I would like to comment on their service. The restaurant had guests on 4-5 tables out of at least 15 or more when we entered yet our order of just one light dish and one main dish took more than 30 minutes! The first dish (light dish) took easily 20 minutes and killed our appetite.

The guy who took the order and the lady who served were really nice.

For the food we ordered:

Light dish had Cured Reindeer with pickled chanterelles, cranberry cream and flatbread: this dish is good when its meat is consumed on the flatbread alone. The chanterelles (we tried them for first time so probably our palettes let us down) were too sour’y and cranberry was also tangier than expected. But the meat on the flatbread is good though the flatbread is like crisps and does not take the weight of meat to bite into.

The main dish was their very popular meatballs of 100% beef with pea purée, potatoes and brown gravy served with the cranberry jam - here the dish was quite unbalanced with the gravy being just enough to bring flavour to the meatballs. The pea purée was absolutely tasteless and cranberry jam/paste/sauce didn’t help bring any uniqueness to the flavour either. The brown gravy was excellent and saved us this heftily priced main dish from wasting it.

Overall, the decor and location is perfect for a nice fine dining experience in the...
