Beautiful hotel and restaurant. The service was terrific. Negroni - great. Wine suggestion- great. (Luna Lapis cab sauv) Scallops - In-cre-di-ble. We saw they had scallops as part of their prix fix menu and asked if they could make two starters for us. They came out in elegant little soup dishes with a seafood bisque base, light caviar and crispy truffle flakes. Unreal how good these little guys were. I highly recommend saving one of your pieces of bread, or ask for another piece, to soak up the broth because they don’t give you a spoon and a fork didn’t cut it. Mains: Oxtail roast and au gratin potatoes with bourgeon sauce. Out-standing. This was so flavorful and rich and smooth, we were thrilled with this dish. Potet Confit. :( This was disappointing. It had dollops of potet mousse (mash potatoes) which had become dry, but were very good when mixed with the sauce and pickled shallots. The shame of the dish was the Okinawa(?) taters which were still firm and didn’t taste like they ever met a pat of butter, let alone had been roasted in butter for an hour or so. It seemed as though they par-boiled them then stuck them on a skillet to sear the top/bottoms but didn’t leave them in the pan long enough to sear…or finish cooking. I didn’t eat them. The good news is, when the waitress saw the uneaten spuds she immediately asked why, I explained that “they were inedible, they just weren’t what I ordered or wanted”. They took the entire dish off the bill. !!!! In Norway!! We were pleasantly shocked and we will definitely go back again and will recommend to anyone who asks.
Love. Love....
Read moreWe’ve been there for afternoon tea last sunday. Honestly, I expected more. I’ve been to other afternoon teas before including some in Norway that were better. The environment is very nice but the pictures do not reflect how much of light comes through in daylight, expect a much darker atmosphere, but beautiful. The teas were great, I tasted 3 of them and loved them. They were the highlight of the experience, especially the The du Hamam. The food however did not seem fresh. Specifically talk on desserts, they seemed to be in the freezer and defrosted for serving. The savory menu had some odd flavors, but most of them were really really good, especially the lobster sandwich and the one with bacon. The scones were also very good. I would be a little more generous in the jam and cream for two servings of scones. After they served the trays, even though there was a lady that was very attentive with refilling us there was an obvious perception that they wanted us out asap and to stay there no more than two hours, after what we paid for. This is fair, however I did not appreciate how they handled it and felt like I did’t even have time to finish the meal. Plus, the place was not full. Overall worth the experience for the beautiful place, but be reasonable in your expectations and I would not come for the food only. If you would like to try a very fresh and equally elegant experience but in a different vibe, in Afternoon Tea I recommend Losby Gods, it was the best one I experienced in...
Read moreI had an Afternoon tea in Palmen restaurant. Beautiful interior and wonderful Wedgwood porcelain. And what a shame - tea in a teabag! And very small choice of teas, no Darjeeling. Nice finger sandwiches: cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon and Norwegian lefse, dill mayo and white fish, mini quiche pie with leek. I asked to change duck pate tartlet for something vegetarian. It was a disappointment to get simple beetroot tartlet instead. Two types of scones: chocolate chip and walnut and raisin were served with black currant jam and whipped cream (though I asked for clotted cream). Wide variety of petit fours. Some of them were glorious as lemon meringue tartlet Earl grey mousse cake and some very average as macaron and a dry eclair. Service was ok, but nothing special. Toilet room was also below my expectations. All in all it was a nice experience but I'm not coming back. There are better places for Afternoon...
