I only had 3 days in Panama to enjoy, the day before my flight I went to Mahalo with a friend to get breakfast on 3/29/19. When we were walking around trying to decide where to go we stopped at the door to Mahalo but, we couldn't even tell if the restaurant was open because there were to employees standing in the doorway completely blocking the entrance. Anyone could tell that we wanted to see if it was open I was trying to look and ask if they were open -- but they were just chatting away. Finally I said more clearly that we would like to eat and wanted to go in to order. We were finally let through. It is really nice with a jungle vibe; a little hipster. We ordered the breakfast burritos and coffee. I asked if they had sugar and cream or milk of some kind for my coffee. The waitress said sugar only. Five minutes later another gentleman sat two tables down from us and order a coffee as well -- except she brought him an array of sugars and a container of milk or cream. By that time i had finished my coffee and had no need for it. A good 15 - 20 minutes later when our burritos finally arrived, they looked delicious! Only to find out that only the outermost part of the tortilla was hot, the inside of the tortilla was soggy as if it had been sitting for hours. After biting into it, it wasn't hot but kind of cold. Gave it another chance and bit into it again and the remaining part of the burrito was completely cold. I went up to the waitress to let her know that the burrito was cold, not warm at all. All she said "Que pena," and continued her conversation with her coworker that was just sitting at the register. Neither of them offered to remake or replace our meal. Neither of us finished our burritos, so we asked to pay for our coffees and were still charged for the burritos because "we had taken a bite."
If all you want is black coffee with no options then this is the place you want to go to. If you want friendly service and a hot breakfast, I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GO...
Read moreMahalo is a hidden gem nestled in the Casco Viejo neighborhood across from the police station that offers an array of fine cuisine. It was recommended to me vy the studio owner of Safari Salsa. The intimate atmosphere offers ibterior and outdoor dining. The robust menu options accommodate every palate and food accommodation. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options are clearly indicated by a corresponding color marking to make it easy to spot. What I ordered: Jackfruit paella- unique optiin but very good holding true to authentic paella flavor. Seasonal salad: very simple yet delcious with tender lettuce, cranberries, almonds and a citrus based house made vinaigrette. Truffle Mushroom Flatbread: the best flatbread I have ever eaten. The dough was homemade, the mushrooms were prepared perfectly and the cheese did not overpower the other flavors. The Octopus dish was reminiscent of homefries with sausage instead it contained chunks of sautéed octopus. Service was very rapid, professional and polite. Mahalo also offers brunch for the early crowd containing the typical breakfast staples sprinkled with so.e if their unique creations. This is one of the best restaurants I have eaten at while...
Read moreI did not plan to eat here. I ate somewhere else in Casco for breakfast and it was disappointing. So I went in search of a better place. The second place I wanted to go was closed. So we went into Snack Shack. I am very glad I did!
The inside is well designed. The patio is full of plants so the air is fresh and clean. The staff is efficient and friendly. The menu is not long but it’s creative and well-priced.
I had the breakfast burrito. It was light but filling, which is hard to do but they did it. The eggs were cooked perfectly. It came with a side of slaw which was freshly made and very tasty. If you are a fan of slaw, this was a proper side dish with lots of flavor.
My wife had a French toast with a creative presentation, covered with mango, cranberries and almond syrup. It too was light but not too sweet and packed with flavor.
If you come to Casco, please come to Mahalo Snack Shack. It’s the kind of place which Panama...
