We have been enjoying meals (usually dinner) at Gulliver's of San Francisco, Great Eastern Hotel, Quezon City for the last decade or so.
While the function rooms of the hotel are often fully booked, we are just glad that Gulliver's of San Francisco is not as crowded that we usually are able to enjoy a relaxing meal at a whim (even without getting a reservation ahead of time)
Food Selection we love their steaks, their steaks tastes much better than the steaks found in some more expensive steak houses = in particular we love the Gulliver's Steak (we just have the bacon removed), we like this steak the most because it is all meat (no more bones to deal with) we also love their various lamb dishes (like the Lamb Curry, Grilled Lamb Chop) their Chicken Parmegiana is also quite good we just can't get enough of their Fried Mozzarella Sticks we usually go for their Gulliver's Salad (in our case, we would have the shrimps removed) their wine selection is somewhat limited, for a restaurant with good steaks, we kind of expected more choices for the red wine we love their English Trifle and Tiramisu desserts, and I usually go for the ice cream as my last dessert
Service the servers wear themed uniforms, which is a nice touch for some reason, the receptionist would seem to be almost always nervous when welcoming us, that sometimes, she would come across as "stiff" but professional (maybe she just need to relax more) the regular servers are courteous, friendly, and professional; they are also quite attentive = being that we go there often, the regular servers already kind of know our respective preferences the seasonal servers are also courteous and friendly, they just need more guidance from the more experienced servers the Chefs accommodate our requests given our dietary requirements/restrictions
Ambience each time we go there, the place is not crowded; but, even if it were filled to capacity, the high ceiling, the layout, and the carpeting muffles ambient noises that we can have decent conversations the volume of the pipe in music is just enough when they have live piano music, the piano would not drown our conversations = there is just one pianist whose playing style we do not like (it seemed he would just be banging on the piano; his syncopation and/or his playing "dynamics", were usually not appropriate for the pieces he was playing); admittedly, there were times we were tempted to ask him to stop playing (but, we didn't, as we know he was just doing his job) lighting is quite subdued in most parts of the restaurant, subdued lighting is really something I am not a fan of; because I want to see clearly the dishes and I want to see the faces of people I'm talking with across the table = given the dark wooden structure/motiff of the ceiling/walls, the dark wooden chairs, and the dark carpet, the place looks somewhat gloomy = while the candle in the middle of the table helps, it casts unusual shadows on our faces and its flickering is quite distracting = we usually prefer the tables with better lighting temperature is too often OK
Wish List increase wine selection brighten the lighting a bit; to make it less gloomy add more choices for desserts
Pricing given the serving sizes and the delicious dishes, pricing is more than reasonable parking at the Great Eastern Hotel is free as of our last visit...
Read moreThis review would've been more stars if not for the things that marred that awesome prime rib experience.
Place is a little old and parking is a bit steep, literally. Price wise it's far from steep, it's free parking. Yessss.
You get this fine dining vibe immediately on entry, nice bathroom, and the service is spectacular. The butler and chambermaid costumes are a bit over the top, but they do fit the theme, but it wasn't hard to call the waitstaff at all, and they were very efficient.
Complementary bread was hard and dry.
The prime rib was 400g of bone in beefy goodness, not the best value but it's worth it. Like the yorkshire pudding, the baked potato was tender, but the spinach was too rich to finish and the creamed corn tasted like Maja Blanca in a soupier form. Could've used a gravy, that jus just wasn't cutting it flavorwise. But the star of the show was the beef and it was glorious.
Fisherman's spaghetti was the biggest disappointment and the reason I dropped so many stars. The cream sauce was flavorless and bland and way too watery, the shrimps were the mushy frozen variant, mushrooms were canned. I put a liberal amount of salt and pepper and pushed it just to the threshold of being edible, but still left...
Read moreI was craving prime rib so after some searching online and a very expensive but nice meal at another steakhouse that despite the advertising, did not have prime rib I decided to take a little longer ride to QC to try Gulliver's. I am glad I did. My fiancé had never had prime rib before and Gulliver's did not disappoint. The staff was very attentive and professional. The overall appearance of the restaurant was very nice and most importantly the food was excellent. I got the end piece and my fiancé got the petite cut. After her first bite she was hooked. I have never seen her clear a plate like she did that day. She even tried some of my end cut. Overall it was a fantastic experience for a very reasonable price. I look forward to...
