One of the best "bang for the buck" steak places in all of the Philippines. I've been eating here regularly for almost a decade, and it's still on my regular rounds for great food at steal of a price.
Whatever rub they put on these steaks makes them delicious, but they ALSO have a fantastic gravy. I generally alternate bites of gravy and no gravy because I can't decide which is better.
Other highlights: fantastic sweet tea (though I like to dilute it with some water), and delicious beef salpicao.
WARNING: Although I rate this place highly, I will say that the quality of the meat itself is VERY INCONSISTENT.
I'd say 25% of my visits, the meat is so soft and tender, you don't even need to cut it. You can just pull it apart with a fork. These visits are heaven and get a 9/10 rating from me.
About 50% of my visits, the meat is pretty good. Maybe it's not perfectly tender but it's still delicious and chewable. Tip: often times the meat is more tender on one side of the bone, or closer to the bone. If you pay attention and find that part of the meat is pull-apart tender, then imagine that sometimes the whole steak is like that. I'd give these visits a 7/10 to 8/10 rating.
Unfortunately, there is another 25% of the time where the meat is either tough or poorly cooked. The taste is still fantastic though. I'm disappointed when this happens and I give those visits a 5/10 to 6/10 rating, but I've had so many amazing steak experiences here that it doesn't discourage me from going back again next time. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you on your first experience.
Bonus tip: I personally like my steak thin and with lots of fat. I never liked steak fat until I tried some of that fats here and fell in love. You can request the steak as you like it (thick or thin, fatty or lean). If you do request fat, note that there are many kinds of fat. Some are edible and delicious, while others are...
Read moreFood - 3/5 Snackaroo has always been known for their unique local take on steak. Although the price did go up significantly the past couple of years, the taste and quality still remains. Sadly, I can't say the same for the other main dishes they offer. They are still tasty AF, but the portions are nowhere near what they used to be. Don't get me wrong though, I still did pig out. Things to try would be their steak, salted beef tapa and papaitan.
Place - 3/5 Their branch in Matalino Street is now long gone which was a bit more cozy than the original branch where we ate. Don't expect much. It's your typical elevated karinderia vibe. Still pretty clean and the toilets are decent. Parking might be a challenge if you plan to eat there during peak hours.
Service - 3/5 Nothing out of the ordinary with the service they provide. You order your stuff out in the front and wait for your food at your table. They are sufficiently staffed and it didn't take long for our food to arrive. I would've given an additional star if we got our cutlery before our food.
All in all it was still a great dining experience. Despite the increase in the prices (which is understandable), their food still tastes great and you can't beat the nostalgia you get when dining at a place you used...
Read moreThere was a time that this was the place to go enjoy cheap but great tasting food.
Well, the steaks are still taste good because they are still freshly fire-grilled, but much more expensive than before.
The cost of all their other foods are also adjusted to the times, i guess , but their appeal was they were low-priced because they were a simple little eatery by the side of the road serving food that was "sosyal"- steaks.
But times have changed and our culinary tastes have expanded to so many other food that their steak - for the same price, can be enjoyed elsewhere more comfortably, a lot lesser smoky, not open to the road traffic, air-conditioned and served more sanitized.
For ₱150 before, I had a great meal.It now costed ₱250 to have the steak with rice, charged separately, of course. AND water. Sodas are extra expenses still.
Their other foods are also the same old stuff that are served unheated yet more expensive than before, too.
I can enjoy better food- for the same cost- over at Maginhawa Street. There are more restaurant choices, too.
Hope that...
