With all the hype happening on The Matcha Tokyo, I suddenly got interested in trying their products even though I’m not a big fan of matcha. When I found out they opened a branch in Gateway Mall, I paid a visit. Here’s what I got: Ube Matcha Latte ₱260 - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Despite not being a fan of matcha drinks, I find their matcha latte acceptable to my taste buds (maybe because it’s 100% organic). Plus, the ube cream foam was nice and you can really taste the ube. Dorayaki ₱150 - 🌟🌟🌟🌟 It’s basically two pancakes with red beans and cream filling in between. The pancake is green, however, it tasted just like your regular pancake and I don’t feel any matcha taste in it. So, if you’re looking for ‘matcha’, this is a no for you. I enjoyed the red bean filling tho, since it’s not sweet and the cream was perfect and had a slightly salty taste. Matcha Milk Jam Croffle ₱250 - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This tasted so good! Served warm and crispy. On a pricier side but it’s definitely worth a try! <3 Vanilla Madeleines with Matcha Chocolate ₱150 - 🌟🌟🌟 I thought this was a cookie, but turns out it’s a shell-shaped vanilla cake covered in vegan matcha chocolate. The matcha chocolate cover was thick and way too sweet for my liking. Plus, it’s lacking matcha flavor so this dessert is a big no if you’re looking for a strong matcha flavor.

A place for authentic Matcha. The Matcha Tokyo serves great matcha drinks and desserts. I especially loved the Matcha Salted Cream Latte! The store is aesthetically pleasing. It's a good place to chill and hangout with family and friends. Staff are nice and knowledgeable too. If I may suggest, it would be better to have an area where people can put their trays after they're done. Probably near the bin so that every customer cleans up after themselves. Encourage CLAYGO so that the next customer can sit down and not wait for staff to clean the tables. It is good practice. Overall, i highly recommend this place. 👍

I don't know what the 6% service charge is for when the service sucks. First time here at this branch today and I was really disappointed with the service. When I came in to order, there weren't any customers. The female staff behind the counter didn't even greet me or anything, but I didn't mind. I was giving her my order but she wasn't responding. It turned out she wasn't going to accept orders and was calling another staff to take her place. She didn't even say anything to me, like one minute please or, sorry, someone will take your order. I also noticed that when a couple of customers eventually arrived after me, the whole staff greeted them enthusiastically. How come I didn't receive that kind of welcome? I mean, I am not expecting that, but if you are going to give that reception to other customers, give it to everyone. Don't be selective. Anyway, when the staff that was supposed to get the orders finally came, I gave her my order which was an iced latte worth P190. She told me that it was 140 plus pesos with the tax included. I had to correct her that the price on the menu is P190. She wasn't familiar with the price. She also had to ask me a few times details about my order. She seems to be having problems remembering my order which was a simple order. I got distracted twice in counting my money for my payment because she kept repeating her questions. She gave me this round thing that vibrates and sounds when your order is ready for pick up. I didn't leave the pick up area but just waited there. When I saw that my order was finished, I realized that my round thing was not vibrating or making any sound, but I could see that the two staff who prepared my order was looking around for the customer who owns that coffee. They finally asked me if I was number 6. I didn't even know that I was number 6. I thought the round thing was supposed to vibrate and make a sound when my order was ready. Ridiculous. When I was having my coffee, I could hear the noisy banter of the staff. The staff were noisier than the customers. So unJapanese. What a turn off this branch is. I am glad their other branches are not like this. I hope the management improves the service here.

My review is limited as I ordered 2 items, but these are very standard items (in Japan) so I think there can definitely be improvements. I ordered hot Tokyo Matcha, which is supposedly pure matcha, but tastes nothing like even a basic cup of matcha in Japan. Quite bland and not bitter nor strong. If you’re looking for that pure matcha taste you get in Japan, you won’t get it here. Maybe other drinks are better, but if their base is the “pure matcha” I had, I would not expect much. The Dorayaki was decent but it was served cold. It tasted better when it wasn’t so cold. Ideally should be served at room temperature, but no major complaints. Atmosphere is nice, aircon is not too cold, which is a good thing. The walls could be a bit cleaner, but not exactly dirty. Service is good and fast, and staff is friendly. No complaints there.

I went to their newly opened Gateway 2 store since their BGC store always has a long line. The taste of their food and drinks are good but not really mind blowing. Some of their products are worth the price and some are not. I got most of my orders to go and when I got home, I was surprised that their matcha banana smoothie cup wasn't even that full. The almond and oat matcha latte didn't have labels (had to tell by the smell and taste) and the cups weren't that full as well. The matcha parfait is overpriced for 395 pesos (saw a similar review here). The ice cream itself is good but the jellies and rice crispies are just meh. They have a promo that day for the choux and the marble cake (Buy 1, Get 1). Pastries are good and perfect to pair with coffee or tea. Still, I find their products to be overpriced and overhyped.

You can easily see the shop when you walk accross the ground floor of Gateway Mall 2 at Cubao. Their drinks are mostly matcha, of course but they offer coffee and tea as well. However, their pastries are all matcha flavored. Price ranges from 245 to 350 pesos for a drink and 140 to 280 pesos for a pastry. The quality of service is excellent. Staff are approachable and accomodating. I tried their ube matcha latte and french matcha flan and both are meltingly delicous. If you think you have no time to visit them, they are open until 11pm.
