Karczma u Chochoła — Restaurant in Łódź

The place is loud. Guests screaming (and it was not even that crowded) and music is competing with people trying to talk. Menu is large and hard to read due to some style choices for names and font. Food is ok, not amazing, mostly traditional Polish without any extra spark. It is traditional but not old Polish. Rather something that mom or grandma would cook for dinner with some starters from bar. If someone os visiting Poland and has not much experience with Polis cuisine - it will work. For people brought up on those dishes it may be bland.

Complementary piece of bread with cottage cheese or lard lacks a sour cucumber. Bigos is slightly less on the sour side and more on the sweet, zraz overcooked etc.

Asked about how each dish is waitress will tell that it is very tasty but will not describe, needs additional questions if you care about something specific. They are nice to you and helpful but two steps from your table (the socializing spot is apparently next to the bar) they are complaining about customers and bragging how they got back on them and this, somehow goes over the music. Imagine that: "And someone was not nice so I left them to wait half an hour on service, hahaha". Feel threatened yet? Careful you customer!

Drinks in the menu look very innovative but reading ingredients you will notice that those are all classics with made up names. From all over the world. I can recommend Harmas, mulled wine with spirit - this one will come in burning and is something unique. Karczma does not seem to know if they are a pub with food or a family place, guess they welcome everyone but instead of welcoming atmosphere it turns...

Niestety bardzo się zawiodłam — może dlatego, że jako fanka ludowości oczekiwałam czegoś więcej. Kicz i tandeta — nie wiadomo, czym to ma być. „Chochoł” sugerowałby karczmę krakowską, bronowicką, a tymczasem mamy do czynienia z chatą pseudo-podhalańską, z jakimiś elementami księstwa łowickiego? Do tego kiczowata muzyka, niemająca nic wspólnego z ludową karczmą, naszą kulturą, a tym bardziej z krakowskim chochołem. No i te poliestrowe chusty zawieszone na ścianach...

A na Boga — jesteśmy w Łodzi, gdzie otacza nas kultura łowicka, sieradzka, łęczycka, piotrkowska, opoczyńska. Tyle zmarnowanego potencjału, a uciekamy gdzieś ni to w góry, ni w Kraków. Jedzenie też zupełnie nieregionalne — placki ziemniaczane z gulaszem były okropne, po prostu mdłe, nie dało się ich jeść. Mięso i sos były dobre. Bigos natomiast zmielony na brązową papkę — więcej tam przypraw niż mięsa i kapusty.

Cena porcji była dobra, bo faktycznie jedzenia było dużo, ale jakość pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Czekadełko na plus — ale tylko jedno: chleb ze smalcem. Smalec przepyszny, za to gzik (czy inny twaróg) smakował jak kupny, mocno przeciętny, bez smaku, wyjęty prosto z lodówki.

Pani szybko zaprowadziła nas na miejsce, sprawnie przyjęła zamówienie i ładnie obsłużyła, jednak później nie zapytała, czy jedzenie nam smakuje — zabrakło dalszego zainteresowania klientem. Toalety były zadbane i porządne. Wierzę, że to miejsce może się zmienić, bo jakiś wkład w nie z pewnością jest, ale wygląda na to, że po prostu nie wie,...

Traditional yet modern.

The atmosphere when you walk in is truly polish with all of the modern comforts one desires.

The service is lovely. Asked for the waitresses recommendation and she spent time explaining the options.

The food was delicious. Hearty and filling. I had the pork rib and it was so tender. The beer and wine were equally good.

I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant for a true polish experience without being too much out of your food comfort zone.
