Walking into Restauracja Konspira felt like stepping straight into a Cold War spy novel—if the spies were extremely well-fed and the secret missions involved defeating outrageously large portions of Polish cuisine. The place was packed, buzzing with that unmistakable hum of satisfied diners, the clinking of cutlery against plates, and the soft murmur of people reveling in both history and hearty meals. The walls, adorned with Solidarity-era memorabilia, Soviet propaganda posters, and a general sense of Polish defiance, whispered of a time when freedom was something you fought for, not something served with a side of cabbage.
The menu, disguised as a tabloid newspaper, was a masterstroke. Not only did it contain deliciously persuasive propaganda, but it also posed the ultimate dilemma—what to order when everything looks like it was designed to feed an army. I went for Golonka (pork knuckle on cabbage with roasted potatoes and horseradish), a dish I first fell in love with in Warsaw back in 1999. This version was more refined, more powerful—like my old Golonka had gone off to finishing school and come back as royalty. The meat fell off the bone in glorious surrender, the cabbage was the unsung hero, the pickled vegetables provided a sharp, delightful contrast, and the potatoes were the quiet diplomats holding the whole peace treaty together.
My friend opted for ribs on cabbage, a dish so enormous it could have been rationed out over several months during martial law. She devoured them with a level of concentration I’ve only seen in chess grandmasters and bomb disposal experts. The service was flawless—polite, efficient, and executed with the precision of an underground resistance network. As a first meal back in Poland after years away, it was perfect. Konspira is part museum, part feast, and wholly unmissable. A conspiracy...
Read moreWe came here for an early dinner and it was unexpectedly full. We waited at the station for someone to come. Several servers walked by us, looked straight at us, but no one would say anything. So I just walked in and asked for a table and we were seated outside. This first interaction should have been an indicator for the how the rest of the night was gonna go, because from there on out, we waited... Waited for someone to bring us a menu... Waited for someone to take our order...which would only happen, after we flagged down a waitress TWICE. Then we waited for the drinks. And then we waited for the food. For almost 2 hours!! If the kitchen is really this backed up, why not let the guests know it will be some time? Or at least check on your guests from time to time? We sat there waiting for over 100 minutes, most of the time with empty glasses that no one seemed to care for. When the food finally arrived after no apology whatsoever, it was admittedly very good. That being said, at this point we had been sitting there for so long, we were just over it. It then took flagging down another 2 waiters to be able to pay and we had to wait ages again for the bill.
Honestly, we are patient people, we were on holiday, but 2 hours is simply not okay. Especially when the rest of the service was so subpar. We always had to ask twice for everything, servers just walked by directly looking at our empty glasses and while the food was good, it was not a 2 hours wait good.
