Cafe Estrela d'Ouro — Restaurant in Évora

We thought it was strange having such a beautiful bar completely empty of people… well, when it came to paying it all became clear. The owner wanted to charge us 14€ for a glass of wine, I have never in my 5 years of living in Portugal seen A GLASS of wine for that price, not even in the fanciest bars in Lisbon. The strange thing was that the owner couldn’t show us a price list where this unbelievingly expensive wine was listed, a Cartuxa Branco (retailing for 17€ on their online store). Nor could he provide us with a receipt, where this would be listed, we had unknowingly drunk wine for over 200 euros (something we of course refused to pay). When he was confronted about this “misunderstanding” he became incredibly uncomfortable and instead of being willing to resolve this, decided to pour himself a drink and blame it all on his newly hired barman. We were disgusted by the acts of the bar owner, almost as disgusted as by the bathrooms in this establishment, that deserve a review of their own. I have never met such a horrible and cold hearted person before he had one thing in mind. Scam tourists, and abuse his staff. I urge you to do all that you can to avoid him and his bar. It will do yourself, and your wallet a favour! I’m waiting patiently to see this...

I recently visited this bar and was surprised to find they didn't have a cocktail menu. Instead, the bartender pointed to the bottles behind the bar as a "list" of available drinks. It was challenging to choose, so I requested two well-known cocktails—a Moscow Mule and a Cosmopolitan—but he couldn't make them. Instead, he offered me drinks like Malibu and cola, which I don't consider proper cocktails.

When the owner took over, he was unfriendly and dismissive. I had to show him the recipe for a Fitzgerald, and even then, the drink he made was poorly executed with unbalanced proportions. To top it off, I was charged €10 for the Fitzgerald and €2.50 for a beer.

While the bar looks appealing from the outside, the service and overall experience were far from it. There is also no table service—you have to order and pay at the bar. I would not recommend this place; better...

Unfortunately we didn't read those many reviews before we entered and ordered. Nice location, nice bartender - but a total rip-off. G&T and beer costed 22 euros, and we couldn't even get a receipt "because the owner was not around". Stunned, we sat and read the reviews - and decided to check on the toilets (mentioned in few of them). Ugh, toilets are an experience here. Tourist...
