Hugo Tapas — Restaurant in Albufeira

Sunday in Olhos de Agua so quite a few restaurants were closed. We therefore plonked for Hugo Tapas beside our hotel. There's quite a few small restaurants in a row and all get good reviews. Hugo Tapas is small and simple but homely. Lovely service from a gentleman who must be the owner. Wife and I had cod bites, sardines Pate and prawns for starters. Pate was in a tin and a little disappointing but everything else was great. Cod was deep fried but really light and tasty. Prawns were perfect. Huge rib eye steak and chicken for main course with fries-all tasty and perfectly cooked. Had fizzy water (1.5 litres!!) and half litre of fruity red wine finished off with apple pie and ice cream and all for €60 - unbelievable value. Lots of other specials too. The food is touristy but ok, the wait was pretty long despite a few people being in there. The real unacceptable problem was with the payment. This restaurants scams tourists through false exchange rates. The bill was €51 but it actually charged me €56 instead. The owner made me pay in dollars instead of euros, and used a false exchange rate (0.85 instead of 0.92). I was not worried about the 5€ but I was only trying to let her notice the error. She infered my bank was the cause of the difference, that I selected the currency and told me to get away from her restaurant.

Great little busy local tapas bar / restaurant, quality of food & service is superb.

No cuisine here at all whatsoever, very honest & reasonable prices with the quantity of each order being big & fair.

Burgers are massive & lovely, their club sandwiches are 'proper' original huge club sandwiches, their steaks are wonderful.

10/10 for Quality of Service 10/10 for Quality of Food & Portions

Staff work so hard @ at a high standard & give superb service, thus the reason why always so busy & why so many customers return, they put many of the bigger restaurants to shame...
