Best dinner in the Azores. My wife and I have been on the islands for 7 days - we are committed foodies and sought out the best place to enjoy local, authentic, cooking. We searched for almost 7 days. We found it at the Captains Table in Agra. We heard about this remarkable restaurant by word of mouth from a fellow traveler (thanks Daniel!) and sought out the location. It took us two days and we finally secured a reservation. Ricardo Cartaxo met us at the door and offered us a table we chose the night before. A quick Look at the menu confirmed we wanted the anglers catch - salad, fish of the day, rice, and potatoes. We chose wine he did not have and his selection of a local wine set the high standard for the rest of a superb and exceptional meal. A few moments after opening the wine and offering its background, he brought our entrees. Perfect is all I can say. A perfectly grilled fish filet sat upon white rice with just enough pesto to add a kick. The salt potatoes were perfectly seasoned and the salad was expertly dressed. I have not seen better. And everything was beyond delicious. The fish was light, flaky and juicy - not needing Any sauce for additional flavor. It was simple, but not simplistic. Tasty, authentic, local, and expertly prepared and served. But then came dessert - something neither my wife nor I, having traveled to Every continent, had ever seen. A deconstructed cheesecake, with the cream cheese whipped on top, above the kiwi fruit, and sitting on top ofbrown butter graham cracker crumbles. Yep, it was as remarkable as it sounds. When complementing Ricardo, he shared that everything is fresh made that day, no preservatives. And that kind of sums up the Captains’s table - fresh every day, made that day, totally...
Read moreThis was our first choice for dining in Angra, during our stay here at the Zenite Boutique Hotel and Spa, and it was a darn good one! Its just a 5 minute stroll from there, and directly above the Marina. The wonderful aromas of fresh bread awaited us as we walked in to this very quaint, but quite inviting restaurant. A "farm to table" approach is what you'll read, but the flavors and freshness is what you'll taste. Our service was top notch, personal and attentive. Ask your server about the story of the "Captain" and how the place began! Not a large fish choice on the menu as it's catch of the day, and some customers were puzzled by this, but the limited choices can only mean freshness! Our neighboring diners were raving about their fish! Head and big staring eyes included...We had beef for dinner! Filet Mignon and Tenderloin aged 29 days. Again, ask your server about this, it's worth your time. Our meal came with fresh baked bread, cheese and olives, their delicious house red, and then for dessert, a de- constructed cream cheese cake! What a great meal, view, and vibe... the blues music over the bar speakers added a nice feel to the place! It was a great choice for us, and it can be for you too. Take the wonderful walk there from your own place, anywhere in the City Center region, enjoy the quaintness inside, the water outside, and...
Read moreWhat an amazing experience! The food, the staff and the location make Captain's Table a must-visit restaurant.
As a vegan and vegetarian, we really had to look for good-quality restaurants that had something to offer. Captain's Table has something for everyone: meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan. The food is expertly prepared and very tasty. Most ingredients are locally sourced and organic. We went here twice: the first night we had a nut roast and the lentil balls as a main. The second night they had prepared borek, a Turkish filo pastry dish, filled with veggies. For dessert we had tiramisu, and they also had us taste the magnolia pudding. Everyting was extremely tasty; you could taste that it was prepared with love and attention.
The restaurant is run by lovely people. We were served by Ricardo both nights, who was spirited, friendly and keen to share how the food was prepared and where it came from. The owners, Hickmet and Yasmin (I hope I got the names correct) came out of the kitchen to check on the guests. We ended up having drinks with them for the rest of the evening. They really made us feel welcome :).
Bottom line: go here. We've tried quite a few restaurants in Terceira, and most were mediocre at best. Captain's Table is a cut...
