António's spot — Restaurant in Aveiro

Rude server, we started by sitting down, we asked for menu's, we were given one menu for 5 of us to share. The lady server made us feel like we were putting her out by not being fluent in Portugese even though my wife is from Portugal and fluent herself. Even my 84 year old mother felt the tension. Customers should never have to feel like we should be apologizing for arriving for dinner, after all, that's why restaurants are typically in business. I would understand if it was busy, but it wasn't, we were one of two tables, I would have thought they would have been happy to have the business, especially in the slow winter season. I ordered the bife 3 pimentes. The meal was supposed to come with a side, I believe it was either given to someone else or didn't arrive at all, I definitely never saw it, and I was afraid to ask. The beef was a big hunk of fat and gristle hidden under the sauce, very disappointing. Pouring a beer, should be simple, the beer was very inconsistent with the pour, ¼ of the small glass being foam not the golden fermented refreshment we were craving. The atmosphere was very plain, nothing special here. I have to assume that they were either having an off day, or perhaps they prefer to cater to locals...

Good food overshadowed by an extremely rude server. I was shamed because I could not understand some of the words of the Portuguese menu and opted for an English menu instead. I was told I should be ashamed of myself and he proceeded to tell his colleagues who had a collective laugh about it...while I tried to finish my meal... I was so taken aback by this at the time that I was not able to speak for myself. This was very upsetting because it was the first day of our holiday in Portugal... Needless to say they spoiled our night in Aveiro. I really hope they don't make anyone else feel like this. Nobody should be made feel ashamed for not understanding a language. My husband and I really enjoyed our lunch here. Our food was delicious and we had a great waitress. You can tell it's a really good restaurant because it was absolutely packed with local people. We shared the soup of the day which was a delicious potato, spinach soup and the grilled octopus. More than enough for both of us. Definitely recommend! PS.
