John Bull — Restaurant in Cascais

Wait staff try to rip off tourists! I went here the other day with my family and the meal was okay, but the young waiter who helped us, came across very nice and friendly, but when it came time to pay the bill thats when his scam started. He comes with his little order machine, pretends to pull up our bill and then tells me it was 80 euros. He never presented me with an actual copy of it. So I don't think anything of it and say okay put through 90 euros on my credit card. He then tells me that the credit card machine has been having problems but there was an ATM next door if I needed cash. He then pretends to use the cc machine but says it's not working and tells me he'll walk me to the ATM. So I follow him, and as he walks passed another waiter I see a little sneaky fist pump between the 2. I then start thinking something is up. As I actually needed to draw more cash anyway I went to the machine, checked it for card skimmers and anything else out of the ordinary, and then withdrew some money. When I went back to the table he came expecting the 90 euros for the 80 euro bill. I told him I wanted to see the actual bill. When he brings the bill it was for 69 euros. I sincerely hope the owners not in on this little scam but just beware as a patron. Needless to say he lost out on...

By far the worst experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Everything was going well until the table next to us got attacked by pigeons. The pigeons were all on top of the French fries. When the waiter saw what happened he asked the couple if they could keep the fries anyway, obviously the couple said no. The waiter took the fries back inside (we had a clear picture of the inside of the restaurant/kitchen area) and a few minutes later he came back with the same plate of fries. When we spoke up about what we witnessed, the manager came yelling at us saying that we were a bunch of liars, that we were in Portugal (we’re foreigners) and in the country we are from. Told my brother to wear prescription glasses to see better…. Never in my life thought I was going to go through such disrespect in a restaurant. At that point, we were still waiting for our food, we asked for the check, paid, and went to the restaurant next door.

By the way, the owner was sitting at the table next to us, saw everything, and did not do anything about it.

I ate here with my two teenage sons as one of them wanted to try the Portuguese steak. He said the steak was nice but there was a point when I had to sit and watch him determinedly chew through a particularly chew bit of steak/fat (?). However the reason I have given only one star is because the service was shocking. Although I was still eating and still had half a glass of wine I was asked twice if I’d finished. ( I counted at least five empty tables around us and no queue - it made no sense). My sons finished before me so instead of waiting for me to finish the waiter leaned across me to clear my son’s plates. It was rude. I have tried to adopt a policy of only ever writing a review when it’s positive and praise is warranted but service here was so bad by this waiter and I was so cross I’m leaving this review in the hope others are spared the experience.
