Considering the restaurant is right next to a very busy street , it is surprisingly quite. The glass walls along the front of the restaurant, work to keep the noise levels from the cars acceptably low. They also have background music playing which also helps. They have a very large mostly covered patio which is great when the weather is nice. The indoor space is equally nice . The wait staff are very attentive and cordial. We had the chorizo assado , grilled octopus and the pork ribs. We thought the food was of very good quality and well cooked. I really liked the grilled octopus. It was tender and very tasty. The side vegetables were aldente. If we had one negative it was the side that came with the pork ribs. It was half a plate of coleslaw. Nothing else. That's a lot of coleslaw. Coleslaw is usually a small side dish with another side. If your not a huge coleslaw fan, you should order another side with it , or ask if they can change for something else. We also shared the chocolate cake dessert which was very good. If you like wine this is the place to go. They have a large wine selection. Not a lot on the lower price scale though. Start around €22 , but most are much...
Read moreWe first experienced Grapes and Bites in Lisbon but this new place just opened in Funchal a few weeks ago and is a very smart, stylish addition to the brand. Airy, modern and boasting a huge display of Portuguese wines, Ports and Madeira to try, drink and buy. The menu is a mixture of pesticos, (Portuguese tapas) and some exciting main courses - we weee a table of 6 and had a mixture of the cheese and charcuterie platters, which come with bread, fruit, nuts and quince jam - very generous portions and ideal if you want to try some wine. And my advice here is ask! Tell your waiters what you like or to recommend to match what you are eating. The wine is very reasonably priced and they give great advice at every price point - one I chose (against his advice) he changed without question just a slight admonishment for my poor choice 😂 We also had a pianist on the night we went - who was excellent and mad for a really nice atmosphere. Overall - my advice for something smart and a bit different, excellent value and superb quality food and wine - make sure...
Read moreSuch a wonderful place with a truly friendly atmosphere. We booked a table and were given the best table outside, and right away made to feel most welcome. I especially loved the starters we had, which were very reminiscent of tapas. We had a platter of delicious chorizo, and pork cheek croquettes, which were outstanding. Honestly, we could have ordered a few more of these small plates and made a really nice meal out of that alone. But the main entrees were lovely. My husband had duck confit, which is one of his very favorite, and he loved it. I had sea bream with Swiss chard and teriyaki sauce and rice, and it was lovely and fresh. We had a beautiful Portuguese Sauvignon Blanc, and the service was so attentive, pouring into our glasses so they were never empty, and I appreciated all the nice cold water that was continually replenished as well. A very delicious and friendly spot. Highly...
