Awful! The worst experience in Madeira. Rude and ignorant staff. Bad manners, the owner lacks any kind of politeness.
We checked the ratings of the bars in our area and chose this one as it had 4.7 stars and nice pictures of food (Unfortunately, we did not check one star reviews.. there are many, check them before you go!)
We walked into a half empty bar/mini restaurant, waited at the table for a few minutes, then an old man (owner?) approached us without a greeting and asked if we had a reservation. We did not have any reservation, he told us with a grin he could not serve us as at the entrance it was written "for reservations only". The restaurant had only 4 customers inside. He told us to leave saying that down in the town there were many other restaurants. But I said I wanted to reserve a table, he looked surprised. He went to the back of the bar and in few minutes he came with a notebook. He asked when, I told him whenever it's available. He asked again when we wanted, so I checked the time and told him later at 8:30 pm. He checked the big clock on his left side, thought for a while and wrote the time to the notebook. We left and came 10 minutes before the reservation time, we waited at the entrance, he ignored us for 10 minutes, the other old staff passed by us without a word or a greeting, then the old man came to us grinning and asked how he could help us. I said we had a reservation and that weirdo started to shout it was not for today. The few people there started to look around, the old man behaved like a psycho. If you want not to be served and to feel unaccommodated, visit this creepy place.
After this I checked all the reviews here and found out many people have had similar experience. It can't believe how it could get the high rating here. Waste of time, the worst experience on the island, there are many many nice restaurants in Funchal that are...
Read moreThis is the best culinary experience I had in Madeira. I've been here 3 times and I always enjoy the evening so much. The owner is very sweet, you have to adjust to his type of humour, but it makes the whole experience even more unique and personal.
You have to have a reservation in advance, so make sure you plan it in advance.
They don't have any menu, instead the owner comes with a plate full of local fishes or meat cuts and asks you what would you like to get. We usually get a mix of anything he recommends and it's always absolutely tasty. For sides you get a mix of vegetables he grows in his own garden, which go perfectly with the fish or meat.
The owner often comes with random culinary surprises, to taste the cheese, olives, some local dessert, it's just an EXPERIENCE.
When it comes to paying, we were always surprised that it doesn't cost as much as we'd expect.
The negative reviews here are so unjust, I understand it might miss the expectations of people who don't have a sense of humour and expected to order a burger, eat it and leave, but for that you have other thousand touristic places which will do just that.
This is a great place for people who like to meet local people, enjoy the great local food Madeira has to offer and are looking for a perfect dinner date or something...
Read moreThe weirdest wine bar I have ever been to (and I've been to many, as well as run one). It's "open by reservation only" as a well hidden sign at the entrance says. Nevertheless I was kindly admitted to one of the many empty tables. They have no menu, pointing you to a blackboard with some hardly readable (and priceless) items. No wine menu either... Instead the owner places have a dozen bottles on the table, and when you ask him about two of them, all he can say is what regions they are from (Alentejo, Douro) - as if I couldn't read the labels. I ask for a platter of cheeses and ham, and get what you can see in the photo (no, I wasn't asking for dessert). No bread comes with it, and after requesting it, I get an unpleasant set of crushed and buttered pieces of buns. The wine for 20€ the bottle is average at best. Meanwhile, one of the two women apparently running the place together with the rather arrogant guy talks on the speaker phone for half an hour in front of all guests. Holy mackerel, who wants to enjoy a glass of wine at this wine bar, let alone a bottle, as they don't serve wine...
