This was a serious winner
I'd been eyeing it up for a while from across the steet where I enjoy sitting for coffee and took a peak inside and at the menu. The exterior is lovely but doesn't do justice to the size or how excellent this place is.
We were able to book a table of nearly 20 at semi-short notice and they were extremely accommodating.
The food was absolutely beautiful. Plating was 5 star. A couple guests said they'd have preferred their tuna a little less cooked but that it was a personal preference so be sure to mention how you like your fish/meat done if you have requirements.
One minor dampener was that the waitress was a bit too visible and open with some of her challenges with the table. An eye roll at this request or a sigh at that. I am all for a slightly sassy waitress with some witty attitude but this came across fed up at times rather than being related to what was actually being requested which ultimately were inconsequential "of course, no problem!" types of requests. It wasn't enough to cause an upset, but it was a topic of discussion amongst our group.
Either way, will certainly be bringing groups and guests here...
Read moreThe service was super nice, professional and friendly. The atmosphere was calm and quiet, serene almost. But the food was mediocre and sometimes cutting corners and some times trying too hard.
We had two starters and two mains. The shrimp was delicious and the goat cheese & cooked pear equally so. Even though the avocado didn’t really complement the shrimp and didn’t taste fresh either. The two mains (lamb chops and steak) had almost identical sides: zucchini strips and asparagus, + one sad lump of boiled and unseasoned cauliflower and two cherry tomatoes - totally unnecessary and just made the dish resemble cafeteria food. The meat itself was delicious and perfectly cooked.
The tiramisu also came with way too much garnish: oatmeal cookie(?), strawberries , raspberries, mango-puree… if I wanted a fruit salad I’d order one. The tiramisu itself once I found it underneath all the fruit - delicious!
I feel really conflicted about this, again the staff was amazing, the wine delicious and the atmosphere great but I expect more of the food for a...
Read moreUpdate January 2025 Had another great meal here at Tipografia, enjoyed the same goats cheese as last time as well as the salmon for mains, plus had the duck main which was also good, if a little over for a 'medium'. Desserts this time were chocolate brownie and the sauteed mango pie, both good. All the staff were pleasant and efficient as always -o- One of the best meals to date we have had in Madeira, a lovely restaurant with a nice and quiet courtyard as well. Had goats cheese starters, pork cheeks & the salmon for mains, red fruit soup for dessert. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasted exceptional, the pork cheeks especially. The staff are also amazing, they know about the dishes and the wine and are kind, courteous and also funny (and they didn't mind me trying out my terrible Portuguese on them!). Will be back here for sure next time in Madeira...
