Well maintained hotel throughout. Good facilities, spa, massage, gym. Very large outside pool. The pool area has parasols all around. However, these are not very wide, and there is little natural shade except the occasionally sparse olive tree.
Standard bedrooms are of an adequate size, and rate it as a 4 star. Large walk-in shower. No tea/coffee, no iron, no bath robe. No local information, guide to amenities, transport, maps, brochures.
Reception, though smiling and seemingly helpful, weren't well informed (due to lack of training) on transport options into the nearest town, Lagos. In fact, not even any information about hotels own facilities, unless asked of reception, which is, in my experience, unheard of. Usually, together with an internal phone directory for room service, laundry, spa, etc. Normally a hotel room includes information about local things to do, places to visit, restaurants, etc., but nothing. Luckily, we could search for local amenities on Google.
The hotel has 3 restaurants, I only used the buffet restaurant, which was inclusive in our package. The other 2 were an a le carte and Italian. The buffet restaurant was nothing special, serving up the usual continental staples. Shame hotel does not have a more local produce section. Also, the day to day options were very limited to 1 or 2 grill items. Breakfast, included, was generally good. Freshly made omelettes were good.
Large bar with good atmosphere and nightly amerteurish entertainment. The karaoke evenings were fun, and some of the singers were ok. Guests would also dance there.
The hotel is 40 min. walk to Lagos, along the board walk, again we found this and the route into town using Google Maps. There are 4 local restaurants/cafes that are accessed along the board walk within 15 mins. max. of hotel.
Lagos is an attractive old town, with a large, modern marina.
The lack of guest information lets this hotel down badly. I give it an overall...
Read moreSometimes a place will surprise you. My wife and I had tempered expectations for a restaurant that was right in the middle of the tourist zone, albeit it's location at the top of the municipal market. The hawker outside attempting to guide patrons up to the restaurant is usually not a good sign.
We took the stairs up, and was greeted with a very expansive view, looking across the river to the marina and Meia Praia. So far so good. However, when we looked at the menu, which was a mix of typical worldly fare with a spot of a few Portuguese dishes, our expectations fell once again. It appeared to be overpriced across the board.
My wife ordered a soup and a tuna on toast. I ordered a chicken "burger". We had been to places like this before, and figured that the portions were going to be small, and regretting our decision to spend so much on so little.
Wow, were we wrong. What came out could only be described as huge. The chickenburger was two full chicken filets, a generous amount of chips, and a very tasty salad. My wife's soup was more than enough for two people, and her 'toast' was two thick slices covered with very large portions of tuna filets, with sauce and melted cheese. We could have ordered one of these and been very happy with the price we paid.
I would say our only complaints were that while the flavor was generally good, perhaps the description on the menus could be a bit more clear. My wife's curry soup was very much a fish stock, the tuna was well done on the toast, but the rest was very good, and much better than...
Read moreThis has got to be the most awful restaurant experience I've ever had! The "sea skewer" we ordered was completely rubbery and dry, the sauce is the cheapest you can find, and the dish tasted horrible. I let the staff know I would not pay for it, because all I ate was a sample of each fish, and every one of them were completely dry and horrible. The first waiter agreed with me and took the food out apologising.
Another waiter came along and said she tasted my dish and said it was "fine"??!!! And that I had to pay for it. They didn't offer me something else to eat, but demanded I payed! I refused! The owner came after a while and told me to go home to my country, shouting and screaming that I had to pay the bill, or else he would call the police. I told him the first waiter agreed with me, but he just kept on calling me names and shouting.
Never, EVER! Set your foot in this restaurant if you enjoy good food, service or being treated...
