THE BAD: Food choices are limited, and the food quality is really bad. I had the cod loin, and it was tough, fishy, and over-salty. Coffee was good. Wine was cheap (EUR4.50 per glass) and, well, you get what you pay for. First glass was almost double in volume compared to the second glass.
THE GOOD: Fado performance was nice - though it was my first time, and I have nought to compare with. The 12-string guitarist was superb! Really enjoyed the show. We attended as a family with older children - everyone enjoyed the performance tremendously.
THE UGLY: The outside of the restaurant is not well lit. When we first arrived, we had serious doubts looking at the outside. The restaurant door was left open, so it was quite chilly in the restaurant, even though some other customers wore short-sleeves! (It was Christmas Day 2023, and the temperature outside was...
Read moreWonderful music - there were two guitarists (one a Portugese guitar) and three singers who came on one at a time filling the room with a beautiful sound and, of course, raw emotion. All five performers obviously love their art and the ensemble sound was very good. The room is simple with one wall of stone and the rest of the walls painted white - good Portugese ambiance and great acoustics. The food was fine. My husband shared the lamb stew - the serving was generous. The soup was pleasant. The shrimp cocktail and the deserts were only ok. We spent 100 euros for two a la carte. There is a set menu for those with bigger appetites that includes 3 courses, wine and tea/coffee which is around 55 euros each. But I don't think you come here for the food. It's the singing that made the evening - thank-you for a...
Read moreWine extremely overpriced. We bought a bottle of lello red douro there and were charged 25 euros. It is worth less than 5 euros in the stores. (you can verify on their online menu). I wouldn't mind paying twice its value, but 5 times is too much. Also, the restaurant is good and you can/deserve to get some great wine for 25 Euros anywhere in Portugal. The music is paid seperately (15 euros fee) so the bottle cost is not justificated by the show.
Besides the wine, The food is excellent. The musicians were plenty and some were really good, so no bad comments on this side.
For a more reasonnably priced fado show, just walk the streets of Bairro Alto or Alfama and some places have cheap food/wine prices...
